Fri, 11 Jul 2014 11:28:47 -0700

Florida State University QB Jameis Winston feels strongly about completing his education, which would likely require another two years in school. "It's very important to me. I was always raised as a student first and an athlete second," Winston said. "I think that's the main purpose in college. Some athletes lose that perspective. It's about being a student-athlete, and not just getting that easy money and going to the league. Even if kids leave early, I would want them to come back and get that degree."

Philadelphia Phillies OF Grady Sizemore is playing center field and leading off Friday, July 11.

FANTASY TIP: Ben Revere is dealing with an ankle injury, which explains the move. Sizemore could see semi-regular playing time, but he's unlikely to suddenly become an everyday player unless a trade or serious injury opens up a spot in the outfield.

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis (back) could begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Rome early next week if he can avoid any setbacks.

Phillies | Marlon Byrd wants to stay

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 10:59:01 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Marlon Byrd, who leads the team in home runs (18) and slugging percentage (.481) and is second in RBIs (52), does not want to be traded this summer. Byrd's current contract allows him to block a trade to only four teams: the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays. The Mariners reportedly are eyeing Byrd, too. Byrd said that he would consider a trade to a team on his no-trade list, however.

FANTASY TIP: Byrd has been a nice surprise this season, and his value could actually increase a bit if he's traded to a contender with a more potent lineup.

FANTASY TIP: Tony Cruz should be expected to receive the majority of starts behind the plate with Yadier Molina (thumb) out for potentially the rest of the year, but Kottaras could be on the major league roster soon as his primary backup. Kottaras might be worth considering in NL-only leagues, at best.

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 10:44:38 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Joakim Soria is attracting trade interest from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers, according to sources.

Ravens | John Harbaugh talks defense

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 10:44:23 -0700

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh recently said he wants a top-five defense this year. He added that what this year's defense lacks in experience, it will have to make up for with "youthful vigor and speed." DT Haloti Ngata and LB Terrell Suggs are the only returning starters from Baltimore's Super Bowl squad of two years ago.

FANTASY TIP: There's no question Baltimore struggled last year on defense. If they can stay healthy this year, they have top 15 potential.

FANTASY TIP: Francis has a real shot to find a spot in the starting rotation in New York with injuries to Masahiro Tanaka (elbow), CC Sabathia (knee) and Michael Pineda (shoulder). However, Francis should only be considered by the pitching-desperate in AL leagues.

Colts | Trent Richardson improving via classroom

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 10:31:38 -0700

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson has greatly benefitted from extra time spent in the classroom, according to offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. Hamilton said Richardson will be better this season after facing a tough situation following his trade to Indianapolis.

FANTASY TIP: There are high, or at least higher, expectations for Richardson in his second season with the Colts. From what's been said this offseason, it sounds like he's improving nicely. He should be the Colts' starting running back, but RBs Ahmad Bradshaw and Vick Ballard will also be involved. Richardson should be considered a low-end RB2 in standard leagues with more upside in PPR leagues.
