New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada made his third error of the spring on a routine grounder Thursday, March 13, and also went 0-for-3 at the plate to move to 1-for-15 in Grapefruit League play. Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin continues to be available in a trade, and the pressure is likely mounting for the Mets to find a solution at the 6.
FANTASY TIP: It's gotten so bad for Tejada that the Mets are now considering giving Wilmer Flores time at shortstop. Franklin isn't a bad late-round flier stash in deep mixed leagues in case a trade happens.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Kole Calhoun will be the team's leadoff hitter this year, and he has no problems with being patient. "I'm not scared to take a walk, to work a count, so I really don't see any advantage of going out hacking," Calhoun said. "I want to let those guys see how a guy's working early in a game and set the table for the guys behind me." In 20 of his 222 plate appearances last year, Calhoun swung at the first pitch.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Erick Aybar is focused on drawing more walks this season, and he drew seven walks in his first eight spring games. The most walks Aybar has ever drawn in a season were 35 in 2010, which was tied for 253rd in the league. His career on-base percentage is only .317 because of the lack of walks.
FANTASY TIP: Improved plate discipline would look nice next to Aybar's solid contact rate and line-drive/ground-ball swing. A higher BA would surely make him more attractive as middle-infield insurance in AL leagues.

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda strengthened his bid for the final rotation spot by tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday, March 13, giving up three hits and striking out five of the 11 batters he faced. However, he hit 92 mph with his fastball just twice, with most of his heaters clocking in in the 89-90 mph range. Pineda threw strikes, though, and his breaking pitch was sharp. Manager Joe Girardi hinted that Pineda might be the favorite for the No. 5 spot. Girardi also said the team doesn't expect Pineda to reach 30 starts or 200 innings in 2014 since he hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2011.
FANTASY TIP: Pineda is a bit of a sleeper candidate because of the fact that he didn't pitch at all in pinstripes last season. He's worthy of a late-round gamble in mixed leagues, but keep an eye on his velocity early in the season.
