Padres | Chase Headley leaves game

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 16:23:12 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley (undisclosed) left the game early after coming out of the batter's box awkward Thursday, April 24.

FANTASY TIP: It's unclear exactly what is ailing Headley. Check back to find out more details on his injury and how long he may be out of the lineup moving forward. Alexi Amarista would be the main beneficiary of extra playing time if this keeps Headley out for an extended period.

Nationals | Not concerned about Gio Gonzalez

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 16:19:52 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams isn't concerned with SP Gio Gonzalez (shoulder) after he left his start with left shoulder tightness Wednesday, April 23. However, the team will wait to know more Saturday, April 26. Gonzalez will throw a bullpen session before the game Saturday to see if he can make his scheduled start Tuesday, April 29. Gonzalez had normal soreness Thursday, April 24.

FANTASY TIP: As of now, expect Gonzalez to make his start next week. Check back this weekend to see if he suffers a setback during his bullpen.

Marlins | Rafael Furcal to return in a few weeks

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 16:16:47 -0700

Miami Marlins 2B Rafael Furcal (hamstring) is 4-for-17 (all singles) in five rehab games with Single-A Jupiter last week and was hitless in nine at-bats with Double-A Jacksonville in his first two games. Manager Mike Redmond said Furcal will likely use the entire 20-day rehab window, which would put him on track to return May 6. It's unclear where Furcal will hit in the batting order when he returns.

FANTASY TIP: Derek Dietrich's bat has endeared him to Redmond, but his defensive shortcomings are hurting him. Expect Furcal to see at least a part-time share of playing time at the keystone with either Dietrich or Donovan Solano. Furcal isn't very attractive for his bat these days, though, making him only a mildly attractive addition in NL leagues if you need infield help.

Athletics | Ryan Cook not ready for ninth inning

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:31:37 -0700

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin likes how RP Ryan Cook has progressed since coming off the disabled list, but he's not ready to give Cook chances to close out games in the ninth inning.

FANTASY TIP: Cook remains the best long-term option for saves in Oakland. However, with Jim Johnson gaining more speed toward regaining the closer role, it looks like you'll have to be a little more patient with Cook. He'll help with your pitching stats, regardless, if you own him in a deep mixed league.

Athletics | Jim Johnson in consideration for saves

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:28:35 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Jim Johnson is in consideration to close out games in the ninth inning again, but he's not back in the closer role.

FANTASY TIP: Sean Doolittle and Luke Gregerson have each had their bumps while trying to save games in the ninth. The possibility always existed that Johnson could earn the job back with improved performance. He's pitching the later innings again and could have the role back to himself before long. Add him now if you have the room if you don't feel like paying a steep price if he regains the role.

Athletics | A.J. Griffin seeking second opinion

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:27:25 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP A.J. Griffin (elbow) will seek a second opinion on his elbow Tuesday, April 29. He hasn't felt good while throwing in the past couple of days.

FANTASY TIP: Griffin is dealing with flexor tendonitis in his right elbow. The possibility exists that Griffin will need to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Eagles | Evan Mathis won't hold out

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:18:28 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles OG Evan Mathis doesn't intend to make a huge fuss over his contract situation this offseason. "I'm here. I'm not holding out. I much prefer reading the articles and the hate tweets and everything from conjecture as opposed to any information that ever came from anybody that knew anything about the situation," Mathis said.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha going to curve more often

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:12:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha is using his curveball around 12 percent of the time this year compared to just five percent last season. Wacha is also using his cut fastball more often. He gets plenty of vertical break on his curve, which gives him another potential out pitch. Fourteen of his 93 pitches during his outing Wednesday, April 23, were curves. Wacha's curve has induced a ground-ball rate of 60 percent this year so far.

FANTASY TIP: The risk with putting too much faith in Wacha is that he doesn't have a track record in the majors besides last season. It's encouraging that his repertoire is more diverse, however. Continue to ride him but be wary of some regression.

NFL | Owners will discuss expanded playoffs in May

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:06:10 -0700

The NFL will discuss expanded playoffs at the owners' meetings in Atlanta, although a vote is uncertain on the proposal to add two teams to the postseason. If the owners vote for the increase in May, the 14-team format could be implemented as early as the 2014 season. If no vote is taken, 2015 would be targeted for expanded playoffs, with a potential vote in October or March 2015.

NFL | Decides on 15-yard line for experimental XP distance

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:04:32 -0700

The NFL will experiment with snapping the ball from the 15-yard line on extra points in the first two weeks of the 2014 preseason. Previously, the plan had been to experiment from the 20-yard line.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks set to return Friday

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:59:48 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (calf) went 0-for-4 for Triple-A Pawtucket in a rehab game Thursday, April 24, and he's expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday, April 25.

FANTASY TIP: Middlebrooks will immediately return to starting base duties. Brock Holt, who has been filling in at the hot corner, is a likely candidate to be sent back to the minors.

Twins | Alex Meyer throwing new changeup

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:55:46 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Alex Meyer has switched to a new changeup, a three-fingered changeup instead of a circle changeup. "It was really encouraging," assistant general manager Rob Antony said. "He threw 15 changeups. He changed his grip. I think he's going to break that out and use it more in the games. So that's a positive thing. Obviously, he pitched well with 11 strikeouts and three walks. He was pretty dominant." Meyer had a career-high 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 scoreless innings with Triple-A Rochester Wednesday, April 23.
