Fantasy Baseball: 3 Up, 3 Down

Find out which players Tim Heaney says you should target and distance yourself from in this week's 3 Up, 3 Down.

Mets | Jose Valverde still the closer

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 17:01:00 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said RP Jose Valverde remains the team's closer after allowing home runs to three of the last eight batters he's faced. Valverde gave up two home runs with a five-run lead in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, April 16. His ERA has risen to 6.14.

FANTASY TIP: It's way too soon to start looking for a change at the back end of the Mets' bullpen. Valverde will be prone to the long ball, but he's earned a little more rope to start the season. New York doesn't have a wealth of other options with closing experience, either.

Athletics | Scott Kazmir feels good after bullpen

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 16:37:22 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Scott Kazmir (triceps) said he was pain-free during his bullpen session Wednesday, April 16, and expects to make his start Saturday, April 19.

Angels | Kole Calhoun out 4-6 weeks

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 16:29:00 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) is dealing with a serious ligament sprain and will be out four to six weeks, according to manager Mike Scioscia.

FANTASY TIP: It couldn't be a worse time for the Angels, who just lost Josh Hamilton (thumb) for a similar timetable. Collin Cowgill is the main beneficiary in right field, and he should now be owned in all AL leagues. Brennan Boesch could wind up in a platoon with Cowgill, too.

Mariners | Blake Beavan has shoulder tendonitis

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 16:15:03 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Blake Beavan (shoulder) landed on the disabled list with right shoulder tendonitis after he was only able to go four innings against the Texas Rangers. He said he has "dead arm" from a knot in his shoulder. "I just had no life on my ball," he said. "It's just frustrating because I had a great opportunity to help these guys and fill the void of other guys being down. Now I'm in the same situation, but hopefully it's something where in the next 10 days we can get out of there and slide back into the action and help us win some ballgames."

Angels | Ryan Brasier to 60-day DL

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 16:14:27 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim moved RP Ryan Brasier (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, April 16.

Padres | Chase Headley out with injury

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:52:13 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley (biceps) is out with a right biceps strain Wednesday, April 16, but the team is hoping he only misses one day.

FANTASY TIP: Perhaps this injury is the reason why Headley has been struggling at the plate lately. In any event, it doesn't look to be serious. Check back tomorrow in daily leagues before putting him back in your lineup.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig out of lineup

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:48:31 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig is sitting out Wednesday, April 16.

FANTASY TIP: It appears to just be a routine off day for the outfielder.

Mariners | New starter likely to come from within

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:46:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said the team's starter Sunday, April 20, "will probably be one of our guys internally," which means the candidates could be SPs Brandon Maurer or Anthony Fernandez.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks nearing rehab assignment

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:44:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (calf) is doing some running Wednesday, April 16, and could start a rehab assignment next week.

White Sox | No timetable for Nate Jones

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:40:45 -0700

Chicago White Sox RP Nate Jones (back) isn't ready for baseball activities, and there is still no timetable for his return. Manager Robin Ventura is comfortable using RPs Ryan Webb and Jacob Petricka in high-leverage situations late in games, but he will not change the current bullpen alignment.

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:37:24 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Joe Saunders (ankle) had more pain in his ankle after throwing a bullpen Wednesday, April 16. He'll try to throw again in a few days. His MRI exam showed only a bone bruise.

MLB | Kole Calhoun to DL, Brennan Boesch brought up

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:31:12 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim placed OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, April 16, and recalled OF Brennan Boesch from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move.

FANTASY TIP: Boesch presents the Angels with outfield depth. Collin Cowgill should be expected to receive the majority of starts in right field, but Boesch can be used to spell him occasionally.

Giants | Jeremy Affeldt activated, Juan Perez optioned

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:26:44 -0700

The San Francisco Giants activated RP Jeremy Affeldt (knee) from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, April 16, and optioned OF Juan Perez to the minors in a corresponding move.

Mariners | Taijuan Walker shut down for two weeks

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:15:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) has been diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement and will be shut down for two weeks, according to general manager Jack Zduriencik.

FANTASY TIP: Bad news here for those stashing Walker and hoping his season debut would come soon. It'll be at least another month now and probably a month and a half until Walker has a realistic shot at entering the Mariners' rotation. In shallow standard leagues, if you don't have the room for Walker in a DL spot, you should consider cutting bait.

Athletics | Coco Crisp out again

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:13:06 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (hamstring) remains out of the lineup Wednesday, April 16.

Nationals | Bryce Harper scratched

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:04:00 -0700

Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper (quadriceps) was scratched from the lineup Wednesday, April 16. 1B Tyler Moore is starting in left field.

FANTASY TIP: Harper has been dealing with a tight quad the last several days. It's nothing serious, but the Nats know that it could spiral out of control if they aren't careful. Check back tomorrow to see if Harper is playing.

Red Sox | No setbacks for Koji Uehara

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 15:03:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (shoulder) tossed a 34-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, April 16, and he didn't suffer a setback. He won't pitch in a game until at least Thursday, April 17, however.

Marlins | Jacob Turner to throw bullpen Friday

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 14:57:54 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner (shoulder) will throw a bullpen Friday, April 18, and should be ready for a rehab assignment shortly after that. The team doesn't need a fifth starter after Sunday, April 20, until May 3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, so SP Kevin Slowey might only receive one start.

FANTASY TIP: Slowey probably isn't worth adding, even in NL-only leagues, because his start Sunday is likely to be his last, at least for a while.

Red Sox | Mike Napoli not in lineup

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 14:43:49 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli (finger) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 16.

FANTASY TIP: Napoli will be evaluated on a daily basis, and he'll play when the soreness in his finger subsides. Take him out of your lineup in daily leagues.

Indians | Jason Giambi could return Friday

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 14:36:41 -0700

Cleveland Indians DH Jason Giambi (rib) went 0-for-2 with a walk and strikeout with Double-A Akron Wednesday, April 16, and could be activated from the disabled list as early as Friday, April 18.
