Hot off the Wire - News, Rumors, Injuries and more!
Diamondbacks | J.J. Putz to begin rehab assignment
FANTASY TIP: Putz will probably need 10-14 days to get back into game shape. He probably won't return to closing duties immediately upon returning, but Heath Bell owners should start to worry. Bell has allowed runs in three straight outings and hasn't recorded a save in nine days.
MLB | Suspensions likely in Biogenesis case
Major League Baseball has begun interviewing players involved in the Biogenesis case, but have not interviewed New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez or Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun. At least some suspensions are viewed as likely in the case, but not necessarily to Rodriguez or Braun.
Patriots | Aaron Hernandez not ruled out as suspect
Phillies | Chase Utley begins rehab stint
Buccaneers | Michael Adams signs
Phillies | Ryan Howard ailing
Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) said before the game Monday, June 17, that his left knee was bothering him. He went 3-for-3 with a homer. The knee has been an issue all season, and he's on a game-by-game basis.
Chinese League | Manny Ramirez done
The EDO Rhinos have removed OF Manny Ramirez from their roster. He had an opt-out clause in case another opportunity surfaced. The Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese League have expressed interest, but it's unclear what his next move is.
Cardinals | Daryl Washington on thin ice
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said LB Daryl Washington is walking a very thin line right now due to his legal issues. "He's had double incidents and, as an organization, that throws a red flag up," Arians said.
49ers | Vernon Davis practiced with WRs
FANTASY TIP: This is notable because the team doesn't have a receiver to stretch the field and could use Davis in a number of ways. Their strong offensive line doesn't require him to block a whole lot. He can line up wide, and Anquan Boldin lined up in the slot at camp. An increase in deep balls could really enhance Davis' value.
Padres | Everth Cabrera headed to DL
FANTASY TIP: Cabrera has had a breakout season hitting .305 with an NL-best 31 stolen bases. He can be put on the DL retroactive to June 17, which puts him eligible to return around the first couple of days of July. Hamstrings are tricky, and the team may take this one slowly to avoid him aggravating it. Cabrera's trade value was never higher, and the team could look to cash in on it this year.
Giants | Possible suitor for Bud Norris
Astros | Bud Norris' value at its peak
Rockies | Trade for Collin McHugh
Red Sox | Alfredo Aceves optioned
Red Sox | Allen Webster candidate to start Saturday
Red Sox | Two recalled
Red Sox | David Ross on concussion list
Red Sox | Clay Buchholz lands on DL
Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (neck) threw a bullpen session between games of a doubleheader Tuesday, June 18, and he apparently did not show significant progress in his return from a strained trapezius muscle in his neck. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 9.
FANTASY TIP: Buchholz is eligible to return from the DL June 25, so fantasy owners will want to keep him reserved heading into the next scoring period. Wait until him to return from the DL and prove his health in one full start without any setbacks before plugging him back into the active lineup.
Red Sox | Andrew Bailey to remain as closer
FANTASY TIP: Bailey is skating on thin ice after blowing a one-run lead in the ninth inning, his third blown save of the season. Fantasy owners will want to keep him in the active lineup, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to scoop up Junichi Tazawa just in case.
Rays | Wil Myers hitless in debut
