Mariners | Austin Jackson, Chris Denorfia starting

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:22:39 -0700

Seattle Mariners OFs Austin Jackson and Chris Denorfia are both making their starting debuts with the team Friday, Aug. 1. Jackson is leading off and playing center field and Denorfia is hitting sixth and starting in right field.

FANTASY TIP: Jackson's value won't change much at all. However, with the M's sending both James Jones and Stefen Romero to the minors, Denorfia could see enough at-bats in his new home to be considered in deep mixed leagues now.

Giants | Angel Pagan update

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:21:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (back) will join Triple-A Fresno Saturday, August 2, and he could rejoin the Giants Tuesday, August 5.

FANTASY TIP: Pagan started the season strong and should be owned in the majority of leagues, especially if you need a boost in stolen bases and runs.

Red Sox | Allen Craig starting

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:18:23 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Allen Craig is in the starting lineup for his debut with the team Friday, Aug. 1, and he's playing left field. Manager John Farrell said OF Daniel Nava will continue to see regular at-bats with Craig around, and it won't be a strict platoon situation.

FANTASY TIP: Hmmm. Craig had already become a frustrating play with the St. Louis Cardinals, and it looks like, at least initially, that might also be the case in his new home. The change of scenery could still spark a solid finish to the season, though, so follow his progress in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.

Cubs | Recall Chris Valaika

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:16:01 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Chris Valaika was recalled from Triple-A Iowa Friday, August 1.

FANTASY TIP: Valaika is unlikely to get enough playing time to have fantasy relevance. He has displayed modest pop and good contact skills at the Triple-A level, though.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly likely to start next week

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:15:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly is likely to make his debut for the team next week against his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals.

FANTASY TIP: Crazy timing that'll be, huh. Anway, with the move to the American League East, Kelly's value should drop a bit, but it's not like he was on the rosters of many to begin with. We feel that Kelly should only be owned in AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Yoenis Cespedes not in lineup

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:13:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Yoenis Cespedes is not in the starting lineup Friday, Aug. 1, because he was still en route to the ball park after being traded Thursday, July 31. He'll be on the lineup card, though, and eligible to enter the game, according to manager John Farrell.

FANTASY TIP: You'll have to wait another day to use Cespedes in daily leagues in his new digs.

Athletics | Jonny Gomes, Stephen Vogt to platoon

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:08:15 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Jonny Gomes and C Stephen Vogt are expected to platoon in the lineup, with Vogt mostly playing first base and Gomes mostly playing in left field. 1B Brandon Moss is a swingman that can play both first base and the outfield.

FANTASY TIP: Since Gomes and Vogt aren't everyday players, they are useful in only AL-only leagues.

Dodgers | Lineup update

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:07:22 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers C A.J. Ellis (knee) is in the starting lineup Friday, August 1, against the Chicago Cubs. 3B Juan Uribe (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup, and he is being replaced by 2B Justin Turner.

FANTASY TIP: Remove Uribe in leagues where you're starting him. He is likely just getting a scheduled off-day. Return Ellis to lineups.

Brewers | Mark Williams suspended 50 games

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:05:39 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers P Mark Williams was suspended 50 games for amphetamine use Friday, August 1.

Red Sox | Mookie Betts won't be around long

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:04:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts' stay on the major league roster is expected to be short-lived.

FANTASY TIP: Betts is probably only useful in daily games for the time being, since he might be sent back to the minors soon.

Orioles | Joe Saunders signs

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:01:42 -0700

The Baltimore Orioles signed free-agent SP Joe Saunders (Royals) to a minor league deal Friday, Aug. 1. He will report to Triple-A Norfolk Monday, Aug. 4.

Blue Jays | Adam Lind ahead of Edwin Encarnacion

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:56:05 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Adam Lind (foot) is believed to be ahead of 1B Edwin Encarnacion (quadriceps), and Lind could start a rehab assignment sometime next week.

FANTASY TIP: It'll probably be at least a week before either player returns from the DL. Remain patient, and check the availability of Lind in your league. Lind is having a quietly solid year in 2014.

Seahawks | Marshawn Lynch wanted additional $5 million

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:54:14 -0700

Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch wanted an additional $5 million more than the concessions he received when he ended his holdout earlier this week. Lynch will also not have to pay the fines assessed for missing the eight days of training camp.

Pirates | No Pedro Alvarez

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:53:33 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Friday, August 1, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

FANTASY TIP: Alvarez has seen his playing time decrease substantially the past two weeks. He has been sitting against left-handed pitchers more of late, so that is likely the case tonight with Vidal Nuno on the hill for Arizona. If Alvarez continues to lose playing time, it will be difficult to stick with him in mixed leagues.

Athletics | Jesse Chavez moved to bullpen

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:52:13 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez has been moved to the bullpen.

FANTASY TIP: This is somewhat of a surprise with Jason Hammel really struggling since his trade to Oakland. But with the arrival of Jon Lester, somebody was going to be bumped, and Chavez is that guy. You can ditch him in deep leagues, for now.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez update

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:48:01 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will join the starting rotation for Triple-A Memphis. This allows flexibility for how the Cardinals can use Martinez later this season.

FANTASY TIP: Martinez can be dropped in the majority of leagues. His value is tied to starting for the Cardinals, which could happen again in 2014.

Blue Jays | Brett Lawrie playing in rehab game

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:47:42 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie (finger) is starting at second base for Single-A Dunedin Friday, Aug. 1.

FANTASY TIP: Lawrie could be around a week away from returning to Toronto's lineup, and he could be asked to play the majority of games at second base if he's being used their immediately during his rehab assignment.

Rays | Jayson Nix released

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:45:26 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SS Jayson Nix was released Friday, Aug. 1.

Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa to be setup man

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 14:41:05 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa will be the primary setup man after RP Andrew Miller was dealt to the Baltimore Orioles, according to manager John Farrell. The rest of the bullpen roles need to be sorted out.

FANTASY TIP: This was kind of expected. Tazawa is now next in line to take over the ninth-inning duties should Koji Uehara be injured. Tazawa, even without being a closer, can be useful to owners looking to improve their ERA and WHIP.
