Phillies | Roy Halladay needs three months to recover
Fri, 17 May 2013 15:54:35 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Roy Halladay (shoulder) will need three months to recover after undergoing shoulder surgery this week. Dr. Neal ElAttrache said the surgery "identified what we anticipated," so there were no surprises. However, Dr. Michael Ciccotti was hesitant to say that Halladay would come back this season. "There are a lot of ifs between now and then," Ciccotti said of Halladay's return. "Does he get his motion back? Does he feel strong again? How is he when he is throwing a ball? There are a lot of things between now and then that might prevent that from happening. But we remain cautiously optimistic about it." Halladay's bursa sac, which was removed during surgery, should grow back naturally and shouldn't be a problem in the future. If he doesn't have any setbacks, he could be throwing in six to eight weeks.

FANTASY TIP: Halladay will be out for an extended period of time, but there are no guarantees he'll come back this year, let alone be effective. That's a big gamble to take if you're willing to hang onto him. The more shallow the league, the less incentive you have to hang onto hope.

Phillies | Carlos Zambrano, John Lannan could enter rotation
Fri, 17 May 2013 15:46:57 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Carlos Zambrano will pitch two innings at extended spring training Saturday, May 18, and pitch every five days thereafter. SP John Lannan (knee) will throw a bullpen session early next week and is "closer, but he's not close" to coming back.

FANTASY TIP: Both Zambrano and Lannan could become options to take Roy Halladay's (shoulder) spot in the rotation with him out indefinitely. Both hurlers are dart throws in NL-only leagues if you're desperate.

"I'm not going to really think too much about it," Melton said. "It's a decision that comes from within and upstairs if they want to keep me long term. We're just kind of talking through some things. Everyone is getting set up and getting the drafted guys done. Hopefully we can sit down and get something done."

Mets | Travis d'Arnaud to remain in boot
Fri, 17 May 2013 15:27:45 -0700

New York Mets C Travis d'Arnaud (foot) will remain in a walking boot for another two weeks and won't be allowed to bear weight on his foot. d'Arnaud had a checkup with a doctor Friday, May 17, after he fractured his left foot four weeks ago.

FANTASY TIP: This is disappointing news for those hoping that d'Arnaud would have already been up in the bigs by now. The success of John Buck and another tough break for d'Arnaud has tempered those expectations, though. Don't expect the catching prospect to make his Mets debut until later this year now.

Rockies | Tyler Chatwood to start Saturday
Fri, 17 May 2013 15:11:55 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood will be recalled from the minors to start against the San Francisco Giants Saturday, May 18.

FANTASY TIP: Chatwood is still young and has had his share of struggles in his major league career, especially against lefties. He'll need to show he can become a ground-ball pitcher to succeed at Coors Field. There's no reason to add him in mixed formats unless he strings together a few impressive performances.

Cardinals | Jake Westbrook receives injection
Fri, 17 May 2013 15:06:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jake Westbrook (elbow) received an injection in his right elbow Friday, May 17, which will likely push back his return. Westbrook was initially scheduled to throw Friday.

FANTASY TIP: John Gast should stick in the rotation for however much longer Westbrook remains on the infirmary. That might push some to consider him for their NL-only staff for the short term.

Athletics | Brett Anderson has stress fracture
Fri, 17 May 2013 15:02:52 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Brett Anderson (foot) has been diagnosed with a navicular stress fracture in his right foot, and he'll be re-evaluated in four weeks.

FANTASY TIP: At this point, it's probably safe to drop Anderson in most mixed formats. You might be forced to stash him in a DL spot in AL-only leagues. Dan Straily has been struggling in the rotation since Anderson went on the disabled list. Sonny Gray will become a realistic option to replace Straily if he continues to falter.
