Minnesota Twins owner Jim Pohlad thinks deferred payments wouldn't be a good option in the team's quest to sign C Joe Mauer to a long-term extension, according to The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "You've got to pay the money no matter what, you might as well do it while a player is playing for you," Pohlad said.

Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports the New Orleans Saints had planned a surprise onside kick for the past two weeks, but head coach Sean Payton wasn't sure when the best time would be to try it. Payton decided to use it on the second-half kickoff. The Saints were able to recover the kick, and they took advantage of it with their first touchdown of the game.

Grant earned an escalator of $1.5 million by topping the 1,250-yard rushing mark, raising his pay to $6 million when his salary is combined with roster and workout bonuses.

Woodson earned an escalator of $1.5 million, raising his 2010 base salary to $6.5 million. He is due a $900,000 roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus, meaning Woodson is scheduled to earn $7.5 million next season.

Nielsen estimated that 106.5 million people watched the Super Bowl, breaking the previous record of 105.97 million.

Henry Schulman, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo did not participate in winter ball this season. Romo played winter ball in Mexico in 2008, but he sprained his pitching elbow in his first Cactus League game and missed the first two months of the regular season. Romo believes he was overused in Mexico, which led to him getting hurt. General manager Brian Sabean said, "One of the fears with someone like him stature-wise is you definitely don't want to be in a position to overwork him. Sometimes you have to work him in stretches as hard as the closer, and I don't know physically that he's cut out to do that."

Updating a previous item, Andrew Baggarly, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco Giants OF Nate Schierholtz will likely be the team's regular in right field because he is a better option defensively. Schierholtz is attempting to replace OF Randy Winn, who signed with the New York Yankees this offseason. Winn was able to make some tougher defensive plays at the position look routine. General manager Brian Sabean said, "The only guy who has a chance to do that against the standard of Randy Winn is Schierholtz." Sabean added that other players would be given an opportunity at the position.

Greg Johns, of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, reports Seattle Mariners SP Cliff Lee (foot) will miss the start of spring training after undergoing surgery to remove a bone spur on his left foot Friday, Feb. 5. Lee underwent surgery after a spur in his foot recently broke loose. He will not require a cast and will return to normal baseball activities over a period of two to three weeks, according to the team. Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to the team's facility Feb. 17. General manager Jack Zduriencik said, "We decided Lee should have the surgery as soon as possible, rather than try to pitch with the discomfort during the year. To get it out of the way and have it behind us is important." The team hadn't indicated any prior knowledge of a foot issue with Lee, but the issue is believed to be minor.
