Lions | Kevin Ogletree sees more first-team reps

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:21:43 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Kevin Ogletree was getting extra work with the first-team offense in practice Wednesday, July 30, working primarily out of the slot.

FANTASY TIP: Ogletree has reportedly been impressive during the early portion of training camp, and he appears to have a leg up for the No. 3 receiver job at this point. But it's still early in training camp, so don't get crazy and scoot him way up your draft sheet just yet. Still, if he can secure the No. 3 job, he might emerge as a nice WR4 or 'flex' fantasy option in leagues of 12 or more teams.

Lions | Matthew Stafford shows off leadership

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:20:56 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford looked sharp at training camp practice Wednesday, July 30. Stafford also pulled TE Eric Ebron aside, clearly providing feedback to the rookie, showing off some leadership.

Lions | Joique Bell appears agile

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:19:21 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Joique Bell (knee) missed organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp while recovering from a knee injury, but he looked good cutting and accelerating with ease during team portions of practice Wednesday, July 30.

FANTASY TIP: A healthy Bell appears to be slotted behind starter Reggie Bush for the primary job, so he should get his fair share of touches. He is a decent low-end RB2 or flex option, especially in leagues which reward points per reception (PPR). Bell needs to stay healthy to hold off a charge from sleeper Theo Riddick and holdover Mikel Leshoure, among others.

Lions | Rob Sims looking good

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:18:52 -0700

Detroit Lions OG Rob Sims (knee) missed organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp while recovering from a knee injury, but he held his own working against DT Nick Fairley in one-on-one drills. Sims said after practice Wednesday, July 30, that he is surprised with how well his body is responding and feels he can return to the level of play from his 2012 campaign.

Lions | Kyle Van Noy back at practice

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:09:54 -0700

Detroit Lions LB Kyle Van Noy (thumb) was back on the field for practice Wednesday, July 30, after leaving the field early Tuesday, July 29, due to a thumb injury.

Jaguars | Marqise Lee lining up all over

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:09:15 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (and fellow rookie WR Allen Robinson) have seen more reps in training camp with WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) and WR Ace Sanders (personal) sidelined. Lee has shown off his versatility, lining up all over the field so far in camp, and offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch is finding ways to get him the ball. Lee is still not 100 percent from an ankle injury suffered in June, but he is improving. "It's coming along. I'm still getting treatment and rehab, but it's coming back gradually. I've got to keep it strong to go through an entire season," Lee said Wednesday, July 30.

Jaguars | Allen Robinson drawing praise

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:07:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Robinson (and fellow rookie WR Marqise Lee) have seen plenty of opportunity at training camp with WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) and WR Ace Sanders (personal) sidelined. Robinson has been showing off his size, physical nature and good heads, drawing the praise of general manager Dave Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradleye. "What I like about him are his strong hands," head coach Gus Bradley said Wednesday, July 30. "He makes catches away from his body."

FANTASY TIP: Robinson was seeing reps with the first-team offense even before Shorts went down, and he appears to be heading for a much more meaningful role than originally anticipated. Right now, consider Robinson a deep sleeper on a team with a young and inexperienced quarterback. Adding Robinson in the final rounds on draft day is a good move, but don't rely upon him as a starter, or anything close to it, just yet.

Rangers | Alex Rios leaves game early

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 19:07:18 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Alex Rios (quadriceps) was hit on the left quadriceps by a pitch Wednesday, July 30, against the New York Yankees and forced to leave the game early.

FANTASY TIP: Rios has been mentioned in a multitude of trade rumors with the team well out of contention, but this was an injury and not trade related.

Team Penske | Both main drivers locked into Chase

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 18:26:57 -0700

Team Penske drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have spots in the 16-driver Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Keselowski clinched his spot with a win at New Hampshire. Logano has clinched a spot as long as he attempts to qualify for the remaining six races in the regular season.

Roush Fenway Racing | Carl Edwards has deal in place

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 18:26:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards, an impending free agent who will not be back with RFR, said earlier this week that he has a deal for 2015. "My deal is worked out," Edwards said. "I have a deal moving forward. I can't announce it yet. When all of those pieces come together, it'll be announced. We'll talk about it."

FANTASY TIP: Edwards has a clause in his contract where he cannot speak about his future plans until after Sept. 1. The general opinion has been that Joe Gibbs Racing will add a fourth team, Edwards, but nothing is official, at least to the public.

Yankees | Expressed interest in Josh Willingham

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:42:35 -0700

Minnesota Twins OF Josh Willingham has reportedly drawn some interest from the New York Yankees leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline Thursday, July 31. The Seattle Mariners have also shown an interest.

FANTASY TIP: If Willingham were to land in New York, his playing time likely would decrease somewhat, as they have a glut of outfielders already. As such, his already marginal fantasy appeal would also decrease.

Twins | Joe Mauer takes batting practice

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:41:53 -0700

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer (oblique) was able to take batting practice in the cage Wednesday, July 30, and no issues were reported.

FANTASY TIP: Mauer is slowly making progress in his recovery, but fantasy owners need to be patient. Keep him reserved in all fantasy leagues until he is officially activated from the 15-day disabled list and able to prove his health in a full game or two without any setbacks. The exact timetable of when that will be is still up in the air.

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:40:59 -0700

He had been the primary setup man for the past two years, but he lost that job to RP Casey Fien. Burton could be a candidate to be moved before the non-waiver trade deadline Thursday, July 31.

Twins | No progress in extending Kurt Suzuki

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:39:20 -0700

Minnesota Twins C Kurt Suzuki is owed just $886,612 after the non-waiver trade deadline Thursday, July 31. He could earn another $500,000 in bonuses for games caught. The team has an interest in signing Suzuki beyond this season, but a person with direct knowledge of the situation said Tuesday, July 29, that there had been no progress.

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:37:22 -0700

Mariners | Chris Taylor is fine

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:36:15 -0700

Seattle Mariners INF Chris Taylor (hand) is fine after being hit by a pitch on the hand Tuesday, July 29, and he was not in the lineup Wednesday, July 30. However, manager Lloyd McClendon said all along SS Brad Miller was going to start Wednesday against the Cleveland Indians.

Mariners | Michael Saunders takes BP

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 17:35:38 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Michael Saunders (oblique) took batting practice Wednesday, July 30, for the second day. Manager Lloyd McClendon said Saunders was not swinging at 100 percent, and that "it's going to take some time."
