Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:39:12 -0700

The Washington Nationals have inquired about the Houston Astros' relief pitchers as the trade deadline nears, according to a person familiar with the situation. The Astros have scouting both Single-A Potomac and Triple-A Syracuse over the weekend. RP Tony Sipp best fits the team's preferences, and he isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2015 season.

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:35:22 -0700

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed free-agent CB Anthony Gaitor (Dolphins) and undrafted free-agent DT Jibreel Black (Michigan). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed, but all contracts signed by undrafted free agents are three-year deals, according to NFL rules.

Indians | Danny Salazar with a fine outing

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:25:10 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Danny Salazar said he felt great in his start against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, July 22, in which he went seven innings. Salazar showed good velocity in the outing and made some adjustments early that helped him stick around in the game longer. The seven innings matched his longest start of the year, and it was the first time he didn't walk anyone.

FANTASY TIP: Salazar was everyone's sweetheart during draft season, but he quickly flamed out due to his inefficiency on the mound. Now that he appears to have worked out the kinks in the minors, he could be an excellent source of K's down the stretch in AL-only and deep mixed leagues.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery injury update

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:20:35 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (foot) left practice early Monday, July 28, because of a sore foot.

FANTASY TIP: The injury does not sound serious, but the team could be cautious with him and have him sit out a few days. Jeffery should be a starting wide receiver in all leagues if he is healthy.

Braves | Jason Heyward day-to-day

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:15:14 -0700

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (back) is listed as day-to-day after leaving the game early Monday, July 28, with lower back soreness.

FANTASY TIP: Heyward avoided serious injury, and he could return to the lineup as soon as tomorrow. Check back before you return him to your daily lineups, though.

Braves | Jason Heyward leaves game

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:14:20 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (back) was removed from the game with "lower back soreness," Monday, July 28.

FANTASY TIP: The extent of his injury is not known at this time. Check back for updates on Heyward's condition.

Vikings | QBs splitting reps

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:12:46 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder have been evenly splitting reps during the early part of training camp, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner will split the reps two ways after the team's upcoming off day.

FANTASY TIP: It appears Cassel is the leading candidate for the starting job at this point but all three are still options for the job. Cassel likely would be a desperation matchup play if he wins the starting job. Bridgewater and Ponder likely would not have much fantasy value even if they win the job.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's injury not expected to be serious

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:11:29 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's (knee) left knee injury isn't expected to be serious, and head coach Ron Rivera is optimistic that Benjamin won't miss much time. Benjamin is heading for an MRI exam Monday, July 28. "He's had a great camp," Rivera said. "He came in in tip-top shape and ready to roll. He's one of those guys who spent time with Cam (before camp) working out. It's one of those that we want to make sure and be smart about." Benjamin's MRI results are expected later Monday.

FANTASY TIP: Benjamin should see plenty of looks in his first season, but he will be a bit raw as a rookie, so keep that in mind if you draft him for WR depth with upside.

Vikings | Adrian Peterson could sit out preseason

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:10:57 -0700

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson does not need to play in the preseason to show something to the coaching staff, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. Zimmer said Peterson could get a few carries during the preseason if Peterson asks to play.

FANTASY TIP: Peterson has shown he is one of the best running backs in the league and does not need to prove anything in preseason games. Peterson should be a top five pick in all fantasy leagues.

The Miami Dolphins have released OT Michael Philipp.

Titans | Looking for Shonn Greene to lose weight

Lions | Golden Tate removed from PUP

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:00:07 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (shoulder) was removed from the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 28, and he is expected to take part in the team's first training camp practice later in the day. Tate missed part of the team's spring workouts with a shoulder injury and said his shoulder was "just a little soreness" in June.

FANTASY TIP: Tate should be fine for preseason and for Week 1 of the regular season if he doesn't have any setbacks. Tate's new home gives him plenty of upside as the complement to Calvin Johnson. He's a great option to have as a WR3.

Lions | HC hopeful to sign Ndamukong Suh

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:58:04 -0700

Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh's negotiations to sign a contract extension have not been a distraction, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. He is optimistic about the team re-signing Suh.

Vikings | Kyle Rudolph contract details

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:55:56 -0700

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph will be guaranteed $19.4 million as part of his five-year, $36.5 million contract extension. He'll receive a $6.5 million signing bonus and a $960,000 guaranteed base salary in 2014. The rest of the $12 million of the guarantees are for injury only.

Redskins | Pierre Garcon tweaks hamstring

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:55:25 -0700

Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon (hamstring) left practice Monday, July 28, with a slight hamstring strain.

FANTASY TIP: Stay tuned, but this seems extremely minor and precautionary.

Phillies | Tony Gwynn released

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:49:23 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies released OF Tony Gwynn Jr. Monday, July 28.

49ers | Frank Gore unlikely to play in preseason

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:47:09 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is unlikely to play in the preseason this year. RBs Carlos Hyde and Jewel Hampton have both looked good so far during training camp. The injuries to RBs Kendall Hunter (knee) and LaMichael James (elbow) have left the team thin at the running back position. RB Marcus Lattimore isn't practicing yet due to physical limitations and not the mental side of his recovery from a significant knee injury in college.

FANTASY TIP: The Niners have even more reason to try to keep Gore healthy heading into the regular season now. With Hunter out for the year, Hyde's price will rise drastically, likely making him somewhat overvalued as a handcuff to Gore.

Packers | Randall Cobb thinks he doesn't deserve extension

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:37:15 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb doesn't think he's done enough yet in his career to deserve a contract extension from the team. He's entering the final year of his rookie deal, and Cobb had a breakout year in 2012 with 80 catches for 954 yards and eight touchdowns. "I got injured in a way that there was nothing I could do about it," Cobb said. "I think my job is just to come out here every day, do what I'm supposed to, continue to work hard, and hopefully my time will come."
