Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:58:46 -0700

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) will not play in the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 3.

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:54:58 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer has been lining up at both running back and wide receiver in practice. Archer said he could line up anywhere on the offense except at quarterback.

Yankees | Not looking at Justin Masterson

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:54:40 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Justin Masterson is not on the radar of the New York Yankees as the trade deadline approaches, although they continue to look for starting pitching upgrades. It's a gamble to trade for Masterson, since he has been on the disabled list with an inflamed right knee and will be making his first start back Friday, Aug. 1, a day after the deadline.

Redskins | Pierre Garcon injury minor

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:42:45 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon (hamstring) could return to practice Wednesday, July 30, after suffering a minor hamstring injury in practice. "I'll be good," Garcon said. "No need to really rush it, or trying put everything to the wall right now. It is the first week of training camp."

FANTASY TIP: Not a surprise that the team would be cautious with Garcon this early in camp. This does not sound like something to be concerned with.

Browns | Will be active in WR market

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:35:57 -0700

The Cleveland Browns are expected to be active in exploring free-agent wide receivers. Their receiving corps doesn't have much size outside of likely suspended WR Josh Gordon. WRs Miles Austin and Nate Burleson have long injury histories. Cleveland may pursue CFL standout Duron Carter, son of Hall of Famer Cris Carter.

FANTASY TIP: Andrew Hawkins could be a candidate to emerge out of the slot, but he's anything but tall. We wouldn't throw much at any of the non-Gordon wideouts until Cleveland finalizes its roster and depth chart.

Giants | Odell Beckham Jr. injury update

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:27:22 -0700

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) said tests taken Monday, July 28, revealed blood in the hamstring. Beckham said he felt good when he entered training camp.

FANTASY TIP: Beckham still has some work to do to get back on the field. The good news is that it is early in training camp and Beckham will still have plenty of time to get back in the mix.

Red Sox | Jon Lester's demands didn't lead to trade talk

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:22:49 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Jon Lester's agent denied a report that claimed that Lester's representatives told the Red Sox what it would take to sign him, which led the team to consider trading him. The report said Lester was seeking "a competitive offer consistent with the market" and speculated that would be in the range of $22 million to $24 million per year. Lester remains firm on his desire to wait until after the season to discuss a contract extension.

Browns | Brian Hoyer faring better than Johnny Manziel

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:18:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) is outperforming rookie QB Johnny Manziel so far in camp, and the starting quarterback job has been Hoyer's job to lose, as observed by Jason La Canfora. Hoyer looks crisper with his mental speed, including actions in the huddle, at the line and during plays. Hoyer is not gun-shy as his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament continues "to wow the Browns," according to La Canfora. Manziel also has acted somewhat guarded around his new teammates.

FANTASY TIP: Neither will be a desirable fantasy starting option if Cleveland can't make up for the likely loss of Josh Gordon, possibly for the season. Hoyer's performance in 2013 gives him the initial edge unless Manziel turns things around in a drastic way. That being said, Hoyer is nothing more than a desperation QB2 and, ideally, a third you can tuck away in a deep game.

Rangers | Yu Darvish relying more on slider

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:11:37 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish has relied much more on his breaking pitches so far in the second half of the season. In his start against the New York Yankees Monday, July 28, he threw his slider 34 percent of the time. In his start against the Toronto Blue Jays to start the second half, he threw the pitch 35.9 percent of the time.

FANTASY TIP: Darvish didn't have his best stuff against the Yanks Monday, but he still managed to pick up the win and fan eight hitters. That's what aces do: They excel when they don't have their best stuff.

Rangers | Nick Tepesch needs to throw bullpen

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:10:30 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Nick Tepesch (knee) will need to throw a bullpen session before he will be cleared to make his next start against the Cleveland Indians Friday, Aug. 1.

Giants | Odell Beckham Jr. talked with coach about missing practice

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:10:15 -0700

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) said he spoke with head coach Tom Coughlin about missing practice. Beckham assured Coughlin that he wanted to be on the practice field and was concerned with making a bad first impression.

FANTASY TIP: Probably a smart move for Beckham Jr. to try to address the situation early in camp, especially with Coughlin getting more vocal about Beckham Jr. missing practice.

Browns | Coaches comfortable with Joel Bitonio

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:09:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns OG Joel Bitonio is NFL ready, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "We feel very confident, comfortable with him at left guard," Pettine said.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira feeling better

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:04:33 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (lat) made a pinch-hitting appearance in the eighth inning Monday, July 28, and was then lifted for a pinch runner. He took grounders and batting practice before the game with hopes of returning to the lineup Tuesday, July 29. He said the back spasms that have bothered him are gone. "I feel better now than I've felt in over a month," he said.

FANTASY TIP: It looks like Teixeira will be able to avoid the disabled list now. Make sure you check the Yankees' starting lineup tonight before putting him back into your starting lineup.

Reds | Zack Cozart's slump continues

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:02:31 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart extended his slump to 0-for-22 after going hitless Monday, July 28. It matched his career high from the start of the season.

FANTASY TIP: If you haven't already, it's time to bench Cozart in favor of a better option at the 6.

Yankees | Derek Jeter passes Carl Yastrzemski

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 08:59:41 -0700

New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter passed Carl Yastrzemski into seventh place on the all-time hits list with three hits off Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish Monday, July 28. He currently stands at 3,420 career hits, 10 hits shy of Honus Wagner for No. 6 on the list. Tris Speaker, who is in fifth place, is 94 hits ahead of Jeter, with 3,514.

Panthers | Thomas Davis drawing from his injury experiences

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 08:43:38 -0700

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis has returned three times from torn anterior cruciate ligaments, earning a Pro Bowl berth in 2013, and has used his experience to coax injured Panthers to stay focused, he told NFL Network's Steve Wyche.
