Dolphins | OC wants faster tempo

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:47:26 -0700

Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor said he wants the offense to play at a faster tempo this season. "I'm trying to get them out of the huddle faster," Lazor said. "And sometimes it's uncomfortable. Sometimes it's uncomfortable for the line to make the calls that quickly. The quarterback might want them to settle in and to make the calls. We don't want it. We want to go. Every single day it's a push. They know it, they understand it. They also understand it's hard, and they're trying. I'll keep pushing."

FANTASY TIP: If Lazor is successful in his attempt to speed up the offense, it could mean a few extra fantasy points for Miami's main weapons, but nothing significant enough to impact where players should be drafted.

Giants | Charles James could make roster as punt returner

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:37:42 -0700

New York Giants CB Charles James could make the roster as a punt returner as a result of injuries to RB David Wilson (neck) and WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) and poor play by CB Jerrel Jernigan. Jernigan dropped three punts in practice Tuesday, July 29.

Royals | Interested in John Lackey?

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:34:55 -0700

The Kansas City Royals have inquired about Boston Red Sox SP John Lackey, but Boston is said to be seeking a sizable return.

Royals | Joe Saunders released

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:34:23 -0700

The Kansas City Royals released SP Joe Saunders from Triple-A Omaha Tuesday, July 29.

FANTASY TIP: Saunders was tuned up for a 6.75 ERA in four outings for the Storm Chasers. He might latch on with another organization, but his days as a useful fantasy option are in the rear-view mirror.

Red Sox | Jon Lester still listed to start Wednesday

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:29:45 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Jon Lester is still listed as the probable pitcher for Wednesday, July 30, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Manager John Farrell said Tuesday, July 29, that SP Brandon Workman will start if Lester is dealt.

FANTASY TIP: Lester is a very risky play for those in daily fantasy leagues, and fantasy leagues in general. It's possible he could be moved between now and 7pm ET Wednesday, or at the very least he part of trade discussions where he is scratched as a precaution. Daily fantasy owners will want to steer clear of him just to be on the safe side.

Titans | Michael Preston checked for concussion

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:29:12 -0700

Tennessee Titans WR Michael Preston (head) was on the ground for an extended period of time after a collision with CB Winston Wright Tuesday, July 29. Preston was later checked for a concussion.

Red Sox | Henry Owens on fire at Double-A

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:29:04 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Henry Owens is the first 14-game winner in Double-A Portland history.

FANTASY TIP: Owens could be on the fast track to either Triple-A Pawtucket, or perhaps even the big club, if the team trades John Lackey, Jon Lester, or both, before the July 31 trade deadline. He has had an impressive season, and has emerged as a strong stash candidate in AL-only fantasy leagues and long-term keeper formats.

Rays | Still deciding if David Price will stay or go

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:26:56 -0700

The Tampa Bay Rays are still trying to determine if they will trade or keep SP David Price. General manager Andrew Friedman continues to talk to clubs, and one rumor has the St. Louis Cardinals trading SP Shelby Miller, OF Oscar Taveras and a first-round pick to the Rays for Price.

FANTASY TIP: The Rays are just four games out of a playoff spot thanks to an amazing run back to contention, but some executives feel the GM could move Price if it benefits the team more long term. For Price, his fantasy value will not change much unless he goes to a hitter-friendly park, as he pitches for a good team, and would be going to a contender. Either way, he is certain to get plenty of run support while racking up many wins and plentiful strikeouts.

Rams | Brian Quick shines in practice

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:25:16 -0700

St. Louis Rams WR Brian Quick hooked up with QB Sam Bradford on a couple of deeps balls in team drills Tuesday, July 29, and has enjoyed a strong camp overall, according to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner.

FANTASY TIP: Quick has yet to live up to his draft position, but it looks like he could be developing into Bradford's go-to target. He is at least worth a late-round flier in fantasy drafts.

St. Louis Ram RB Tre Mason saw received some snaps with the first-team Tuesday, July 29, with RB Zac Stacy receiving a majority of the work with the first-team.

FANTASY TIP: Mason could end being a nice change-of-pace back for the Rams, but Stacy is set to receive a bulk of the carries. Consider Stacy a solid RB2 this season.

Rams | Isaiah Pead misses practice

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:16:17 -0700

Roush Fenway Racing | Carl Edwards on the way out

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:15:51 -0700

Roush Fenway Racing drive Carl Edwards will depart at the end of this season, leaving the team with a youthful roster featuring Greg Biffle, Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Edwards has been with Roush since the 2004 season, winning 23 races and twice coming close to a championship during the span. There is a provision in Edwards' contract that he does not disclose his plans for 2015 until after Sept. 1.

FANTASY TIP: It's uncertain where Edwards will end up for the 2015 Sprint Cup Series season, but he will find a full-time ride, that is for certain. However, monitor the situation closely. If he ends up with a lesser team, his fantasy value could be altered dramatically. Stewart-Haas Racing and Hendrick Motorsports have no room, and rampant speculation has Edwards landing a ride with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2015. If so, he could remain a fantasy force for years to come with potential teammates in Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth.

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:10:49 -0700

Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora has shown a lot of speed during pass-rush during training camp, according to ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure, and has dropped back in pass coverage on occasion.

Joe Gibbs Racing | Denny Hamlin penalized 75 points

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:06:26 -0700

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin was stripped of 75 points in the series' owner championship standings, and Hamlin was docked 75 points in the drivers' standings after infractions were found Tuesday, July 29, in a post-race inspection after the Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hamlin had finished third in the race. Crew chief Darian Grubb was also suspended for the next six Sprint Cup events and fined $125,000, while car chief Wesley Sherrill was issued a six-race suspension, and he will be on probation for six months. JGR plans to appeal the penalty, although Grubb and Sherrill will begin serving their suspensions immediately, starting this weekend at Pocono Raceway.

FANTASY TIP: Hamlin drops from 11th to 21st overall in the Sprint Cup standings, a stiff penalty for a driver who already is one start shorter than everyone else due to an early-season eye injury. He is still a good bet for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup after winning at Talladega Superspeedway in May. However, fantasy owners will likely lose points from this past weekend when adjustments are made to the points, perhaps changing many results. In addition, the loss of Grubb going forward, and an interim crew chief, might cause some uneven results, although Hamlin has usually fared well at the next stop, Pocono.

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 18:55:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks WR Taylor Price (hamstring) was placed on the team's Injured Reserve list Tuesday, July 29, with a hamstring injury.
