Broncos | Ronnie Hillman praised

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:38:47 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman has been unbelievable this offseason, according to running backs coach Eric Studesville. Studesville said Hillman is starting to maximize his potential and it's been exciting to witness.

FANTASY TIP: Hillman could easily be the Broncos' third option at running back behind Montee Ball and C.J. Anderson this season. Unless one of the two is injured, he's not draftable in any scoring format.

Red Sox | Will Middlebrooks returning Friday

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:35:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks (finger) will be activated from the disabled list Friday, Aug. 1.

FANTASY TIP: The writing was on the wall for a Middlebrooks return once the Red Sox traded Stephen Drew to the rival Yanks. Middlebrooks could enter into a platoon with Kelly Johnson at third base when he returns, but Middlebrooks figures to see the majority of the playing time. If you're in need at a corner infield spot in a deep mixed league, Middlebrooks might be just what the doctor ordered, just don't expect much help in the BA department.

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:35:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Neil Ramirez (triceps) expects to return to the team once his 15-day disabled list stint is over. He is expected to continue his rehab in Mesa, Ariz., at the Cubs' facility rather than travel with the team on their upcoming six-game road trip to Los Angeles and Denver.

FANTASY TIP: Ramirez has pitched well this season. He should be back before Pedro Strop gains any traction in leapfrogging him on the depth chart.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) and the team will make a decision soon on whether he will undergo arthroscopic right elbow surgery to clean out bone chips and other debris.

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:28:04 -0700

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:18:15 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Blake Treinen was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse Thursday, July 31.

FANTASY TIP: Treinen is likely to pitch out of the bullpen. He has started five games for the Nationals this season, though. He has NL-only value, if he gets a spot start.

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 15:15:48 -0700

Giants | Matt Cain update

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 14:56:14 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain's (elbow) ulnar collateral ligament checked out fine. However, Dr. James Andrews made a recommendation on how to treat loose bodies in Cain's right elbow. The Giants are contemplating their next move after the diagnosis.

FANTASY TIP: Cain has a puncher's chance of pitching again in 2014, but the wise move is scouting a long-term replacement.

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 14:49:46 -0700

Cubs | Hector Rondon improving his slider

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 14:41:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon's slider has improved and made his fastball more effective, according to manager Rick Renteria. Rondon has allowed two earned runs over eight innings in his last nine appearances. Renteria noted Rondon's slider was flatter and as fast as his fastball earlier in the season. "The last couple of days, all of us have noticed him using the slider a little more effectively and it's got more depth. He's been working on it," Renteria said. Renteria believes Rondon has the potential to be a consistent closer.

FANTASY TIP: After a horrid nine-game stretch in June, when Rondon allowed nine runs over 8 2/3 innings, his recent form is encouraging. Renteria's endorsement and commitment to Rondon makes him a most-own closer in the majority of formats.
