Texans | Andre Johnson looking good

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 19:32:17 -0700

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson has showed no signs of rust from his time away from the team this offseason. Johnson had an impressive practice during joint workouts with the Denver Broncos Wednesday, Aug. 20. "He's a big part of what we're doing here," head coach Bill O'Brien said.

FANTASY TIP: Johnson will be a top-tier fantasy receiver despite the fact he has either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Case Keenum throwing him passes, not exactly a who's who of Pro Bowl quarterbacks.

Colts | Trent Richardson off to slow start

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 19:31:25 -0700

Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson is off to a slow start in training camp and the preseason, posting just 34 yards in 14 attempts. At 2.4 yards per carry, that's even less than the 2.9 yards per carry he averaged in his disappointing 2014. "Trent, he needs to answer the bell and do his job to the best of his ability," general manager Ryan Grigson said Wednesday, Aug. 20.

FANTASY TIP: Richardson has gone from an early-round fantasy option to a mid- to late-round pick with fantasy owners crossing their fingers under the table.

Broncos | Emmanuel Sanders getting close

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 19:29:29 -0700

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (quadriceps) was involved in practice Wednesday, Aug. 20, but he is not working in "live" setting yet. Head coach John Fox would not rule out Sanders' return from a quadriceps injury in time for the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 23, against the Houston Texans.

FANTASY TIP: Sanders is in line to be either the No. 3 or 4 receiver in Denver. On most clubs, that wouldn't amount to much fantasy appeal, but with Peyton Manning in the high-octane offense, Sanders is a decent WR4 or flex play if he can get healthy.

Broncos | Montee Ball improving

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 19:27:37 -0700

Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (appendix) continues to do more work in practice each day, but most of his work continues to be outside of the team structure. However, he was wearing pads and working individually with QB Peyton Manning Wednesday, Aug. 20, and his workload is scheduled to increase. Ball might be ready to get some action in the preseason finale.

FANTASY TIP: Fantasy owners should be cautiously optimistic that Ball will be available for Week 1, but be sure to have plenty of depth on hand in case he isn't ready to answer the bell for the opener. Ronnie Hillman would be a great play in Week 1 if Ball is out or suffers some sort of setback.

Bengals | Marvin Jones sidelined

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 19:23:42 -0700

Cincinnati Bengals WR Marvin Jones (foot) missed practice Wednesday, Aug. 20, due to his foot injury.

FANTASY TIP: Jones will have plenty of time to rest his injury, as he is suspended for the first four games of the regular season. He is expected to step in and start opposite A.J. Green in Week 5, and he could be a sneaky late-round draft pick with a lot of upside.

Mets | Jacob deGrom back Saturday

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:55:14 -0700

New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom (shoulder) will come off the 15-day disabled list to start Saturday, Aug. 23, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

FANTASY TIP: Fantasy owners should keep deGrom reserved until he makes it through this outing without any setbacks. If he looks good, activate him for the upcoming scoring period.

Mets | Bartolo Colon to start Sunday

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:52:18 -0700

New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon (personal) will pitch Sunday, Aug. 24, against the Los Angeles Dodgers before returning to the Dominican Republic for his mother's funeral.

FANTASY TIP: Colon is a risky fantasy play given the fact he has been traveling back and forth to the DR. He might be mentally and physically drained right now, and rightly so.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia unavailable

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:49:50 -0700

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia (back) was unavailable Wednesday, Aug. 20, against the Oakland Athletics due to a back injury.

FANTASY TIP: With Mejia unavailable, Jeurys Familia picked up a five-out save, his fourth save of the season. If Mejia is forced to miss some time, Familia would likely take over ninth-inning duties.

Giants | Buster Posey has sore hip

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:49:15 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants C/1B Buster Posey (hip) was out of the lineup Wednesday, Aug. 20, against the Chicago Cubs after his left hip flared up in the game Tuesday, Aug. 19. He received treatment and is available off the bench. Manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes Posey can return Wednesday, Aug. 20.

FANTASY TIP: Daily fantasy owners will want to be careful and wait to see Posey prove his health in one full game before plugging him back into the active lineup.

Giants | Brandon Belt remains sidelined

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:48:29 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt (concussion) had an examination Wednesday, Aug. 20, and he was informed it will be at least two to three more weeks until he is cleared to do any physical activity.

FANTASY TIP: The clock is ticking, and time is not on Belt's side. He might be able to return for a week or two of the regular season, but even that is debatable at this point. If you have the roster flexibility, hang onto him if you have waited this long. Fantasy owners who have limited roster space available might want to chance it and cut him for someone who can help now.

Giants | Joe Panik returns

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:47:50 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (finger) returned to the starting lineup Wednesday, Aug. 20, against the Chicago Cubs after missing a couple of days.

FANTASY TIP: Panik has seized the starting second base job, and he has emerged as a solid fantasy option in most NL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats. He entered the game Wednesday with three straight multi-hit efforts.

Dodgers | Zack Greinke pushed back

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:46:51 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Zack Greinke (elbow) has been pushed back to start Saturday, Aug. 23, against the New York Mets, as manager Don Mattingly gives him a couple of extra days to rest his tender elbow. The injury is not believed to be serious, and Mattingly said an MRI two weeks ago showed similar irritation to what Greinke had in spring training 2013.

FANTASY TIP: Fantasy owners in daily leagues and those which allow daily transactions might want to keep Greinke reserved to let him prove his health. He could very well work with restrictions or suffer a setback, so play it safe.

Dodgers | Clayton Kershaw scoots up

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 17:05:14 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw will start Thursday, Aug. 21, against the New York Mets.

FANTASY TIP: Don Mattingly moved his ace up a day with Zack Greinke (elbow) hurting and in need of additional rest.

Angels | Garrett Richards injured

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 16:44:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (leg, knee) suffered an apparent left knee or leg injury while covering first base in the bottom of the second inning against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday, Aug. 20. He was down for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher.

FANTASY TIP: It certainly looked serious, and looked similar to the injury Tim Hudson suffered a couple of years ago when he was a member of the Atlanta Braves. Fantasy owners hold your breath that this is not a season-ending injury, and everyone keep your fingers crossed for Richards' well-being.

Steelers | LeGarrette Blount charged

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 16:40:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB LeGarrette Blount and RB Le'Veon Bell were charged by Ross Township Police Wednesday, Aug. 20, with marijuana possession.

FANTASY TIP: Blount could potentially be facing a one-game suspension, if you look around the league. Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe was penalized one game by the league for a similar infraction. However, the club could also potentially step up and penalize Blount (and Bell), too. His fantasy value was a bit limited with Bell expected to get a lion's share of the carries, but he is even less attractive if he misses any playing time.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell in hot water

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 16:39:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RB Le'Veon Bell and RB LeGarrette Blount were charged by Ross Township Police Wednesday, Aug. 20, with marijuana possession. Bell was also charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after the traffic stop Wednesday.

FANTASY TIP: Bell could be facing disciplinary action from the team and/or the league, and he could very well end up being suspended. Blount might have been in line for carries in Bell's place, but he is likely to be in hot water, too. This matter is certainly not over. If you have drafted your fantasy team already, hang tight, as Bell will certainly have plenty of appeal still. However, if you have not yet drafted, drop Bell down a few spots, as a suspension could change his value dramatically depending on the amount of games he potentially misses.

Cubs | Will resume play Thursday

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 16:24:13 -0700

The Chicago Cubs thought they won 2-0 Tuesday, Aug. 19, against the San Francisco Giants in a game called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to unplayable conditions. However, the Giants won their protest of how the situation was handled by the Cubs, and the game will be resumed Thursday, Aug. 21, in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Cubs leading 2-0.

FANTASY TIP: Tsuyoshi Wada was awarded with a complete game shutout, working five innings and allowing six hits, no walks and three strikeouts. However, with the resumption of the game, Wada's fantasy total likely will be changed by daily fantasy providers and in weekly formats since he is unlikely to come back Thursday. Wada still qualifies for the win if the Cubs do not lose the lead at any point before the game is completed, so that's good news for fantasy owners.

Giants | Win protest of tarp game

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 16:18:01 -0700

The San Francisco Giants won a protest filed on the lack of continued efforts by the Chicago Cubs to dry the field Tuesday, Aug. 19. After a four hour and 34 minute delay the game was called, with the Cubs rewarded a 2-0 win. However, the Giants protested and won, and the game will now be resumed Thursday, Aug. 21 at 4 p.m. before the regularly scheduled game, according to a source. The Giants are the first team in 28 years to win an MLB protest.

FANTASY TIP: It will be interesting to see how fantasy leagues, particularly daily formats, handle the situation. Ryan Vogelsong was rewarded with a complete game loss after working five innings, but with the game resuming, and Vogelsong unlikely to take the ball Thursday, that likely will be changed. It is a unique situation for sure.
