Yankees | More on Michael Pineda

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 17:45:42 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda is not subject to a mandatory suspension for his ejection for using a foreign substance Wednesday, April 23, against the Boston Red Sox.

FANTASY TIP: The situation will certainly be reviewed by the major league offices, however, and a suspension could be coming. His suspension has had one huge impact already, and that was in the Twitterverse, as #PINEda was among the Top 10 trends.

Marlins | Christian Yelich extends hitting streak

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 17:45:12 -0700

Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich had a single in four at-bats Wednesday, April 23, against the Atlanta Braves, pushing his career-high hitting streak to 17 games. He struck out in his other three at-bats.

FANTASY TIP: Yelich has had an interesting hitting streak. He is hitting .366 during the impressive hitting streak, but he has also struck out 21 times in 71 at-bats during the run. He has emerged as a must-start in all NL-only fantasy leagues, and has been a solid mid-level pick-up in daily formats, especially with providers which do not penalize strikeouts.

Diamondbacks | A.J. Pollock out again

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 17:44:54 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF A.J. Pollock (neck) did not start Wednesday, April 23, against the Chicago Cubs due to neck stiffness, but he was able to make a pinch-running appearance in the ninth inning.

Cubs | Pedro Strop blows save on Wrigley anniversary

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 17:42:59 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Pedro Strop allowed four runs - one earned - and two walks with one hit while retiring just two batters in a relief appearance loss Wednesday, April 23, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was another gut-wrenching loss for the Cubs on the 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field.

FANTASY TIP: It was a non-save situation, but an ugly performance nonetheless. He needed 31 pitches to record two outs, and could be unavailable Thursday. He might be skating on thin ice, but there isn't really a sure fire closer waiting in the wings, either.

Cubs | Justin Ruggiano to get MRI

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 17:26:41 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs OF Justin Ruggiano (hamstring) will have an MRI on his left hamstring after suffering an injury Wednesday, April 23, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Ruggiano is going to get an MRI," manager Rick Renteria said. "We won't know the extent of it until he gets seen."

After examination, he was ejected from the game.

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:43:20 -0700

FANTASY TIP: Kouz's injury doesn't seem to be very serious, so he should be back any day now.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright works out

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:40:55 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (knee) worked out as he normally would Wednesday, April 23, and even did one-legged squats. "I'd be lying if I said there was a little tenderness with complete extension," Wainwright said. "I'm already significantly better than I was last night." He expects to make his next start Sunday, April 27.

FANTASY TIP: All signs point to Waino being fine for his next start. Plan to keep him in your starting lineups this weekend.

Rangers | Martin Perez with nice encore performance

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:38:22 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez allowed just three hits in a shutout effort against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, April 23, after coming off his first career shutout and complete game in his last outing. Perez struck out three and walked two in 108 pitches and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning.

Phillies | Cody Asche continues to sit

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:31:47 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Cody Asche was benched for the third straight game Wednesday, April 23, after manager Ryne Sandberg said he had faith in the youngster Monday, April 21. The team faced lefties both Monday and Tuesday, April 22, but they are facing a right-hander Wednesday. SS Freddy Galvis is starting at third. Asche hasn't started in six of the team's last 11 games. "He's not playing as well as we'd like," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "But we have to give him chances to play."

FANTASY TIP: Ache's slow start has found him riding pine more often than his owners would like to see. Sandberg is apparently very fond of Galvis and what he can offer the squad in a utility role. Asche isn't worth owning in most mixed leagues if his playing time continues to be spotty.

Dodgers | Four regulars not starting

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:30:01 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez, OF Carl Crawford, 2B Dee Gordon and C Tim Federowicz are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 23.

FANTASY TIP: Remove all of these players from your starting lineups this evening.

Mets | Daisuke Matsuzaka a closing option?

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:29:30 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said SP Daisuke Matsuzaka is an option to close out games. RP Jose Valverde held the closing job for less than three weeks, and now RP Kyle Farnsworth is in the ninth-inning role. Matsuzaka has made just two relief appearances for the team, allowing a run on two hits in four innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. One problem with Matsuzaka pitching at the back of the bullpen is that he has value as a long-relief man and a backup for the starting rotation.

FANTASY TIP: Dice-K isn't a realistic option just yet, and it would take a meltdown or injury from Farnsworth for this to become serious. For now, he's a speculative target for those truly desperate for potential save opps.

Jets | Austin Seferian-Jenkins to visit

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:23:33 -0700

The New York Jets will visit with Washington TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins Thursday, April 24.

Nationals | Ryan Zimmerman's recovery on track

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:19:26 -0700

Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (thumb) has started conditioning exercises and light fielding drills with just his glove hand. He's also running on an underwater treadmill. Zimmerman isn't ready to start squeezing a bat or putting pressure on his thumb, however, but recent X-rays showed his thumb is healing properly. The team's initial timetable for a four- to six-week recovery are on track.

FANTASY TIP: This is good news if you own Zimmerman. There is still a while before he'll be back, though, so you'll need to remain patient. Danny Espinosa remains a nice option for middle infield depth in deep mixed leagues until Zimmerman returns.

Nationals | Scott Hairston not ready

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:13:44 -0700

Washington Nationals OF Scott Hairston (oblique) is working his way back from a strained left oblique, and he took batting practice Wednesday, April 23, for the first time and suffered no setbacks. He'll need to go on a minor league rehab assignment before he returns. Hairston is eligible to come off the disabled list already.

Diamondbacks | Mark Trumbo update

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 15:11:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, Arizona Diamondbacks OF Mark Trumbo (foot) has a stress fracture in the third metatarsal of his left foot. There is no timetable for his return.

FANTASY TIP: Trumbo is expected to land on the DL for a lengthy period of time if his second opinion confirms the diagnosis. Foot and lower body injuries can limit a player's torque and pop, especially a hitter such as Trumbo. You'll have to bite the bullet and reserve him for now.
