Dodgers | Carl Crawford OK with bench role

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 08:59:16 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Carl Crawford seems to be fine with serving in a bench role after being activated from the disabled list. "Things have been going well for the team right now and he pretty much said he's going to leave it like it is right now and mix me in wherever he can, so there's not much I can say to that," Crawford said. "Guys have been playing extremely well, they got back into first place. I've just got to be ready for when my number is called and try to stay sharp enough to play well when I do get in." OF Matt Kemp has been the everyday left fielder since May 28, and he's hitting .289 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 38 games since. Manager Don Mattingly said there are no plans to use either Crawford or Kemp in center field.

FANTASY TIP: Until Crawford starts to see valuable playing time - that might not happen unless a trade occurs - he's only valuable in NL-only leagues.

Brewers | Wei-Chung Wang to DL

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 08:58:55 -0700

The Milwaukee Brewers placed RP Wei-Chung Wang (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder tightness Thursday, July 10.

Mariners | Scouted Marlon Byrd

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 08:56:10 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Marlon Byrd was recently scouted by the Seattle Mariners.

FANTASY TIP: Though he already has hit 18 home runs in 2014, the 34-year-old probably would be a reasonably priced acquisition that immediately would boost the M's lineup. He'd be an attractive FAAB prize for AL-only players who could approach 30 homers by season's end.

Reds | Billy Hamilton should start Friday

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 08:46:52 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Billy Hamilton (hamstring) should return to the lineup Friday, July 11. He appeared as a pinch-hitter Thursday, July 10, and lined out in the 10th inning.

FANTASY TIP: Get ready to slot him back into your fantasy lineup.

Packers | Won't retire Brett Favre's jersey yet

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 08:11:22 -0700

The Green Bay Packers will not retire former QB Brett Favre's jersey in the near future. They eventually want to, but Favre and the team worry about the negative reception he may receive at Lambeau Field. Favre may appear at a home game this year in some fashion.

Blue Jays | Adam Lind to DL

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 08:05:24 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Adam Lind (foot) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right foot fracture. Toronto recalled 1B Dan Johnson from Triple-A Buffalo and designated RP Bobby Korecky for assignment.

FANTASY TIP: Johnson should be an AL-only asset, at least in a platoon role, and may earn fleeting deep mixed utility. Lind should be out for at least one month.

Astros | Collin McHugh pushed back

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 07:32:07 -0700

Houston Astros SP Collin McHugh (fingernail) is unlikely to pitch Saturday, July 12, because his bullpen session was moved from Thursday, July 10, to Friday, July 11. A decision will be made Friday. SP Brett Oberholtzer is available if needed Saturday.

FANTASY TIP: McHugh could be rested through the All-Star break, so the surprise breakthrough arm may not pitch until next week. Adjust accordingly in deep leagues.

Blue Jays | Promoting Dan Johnson

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 07:29:09 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Dan Johnson will have his contract selected from Triple-A Buffalo before the Jays' game Friday, July 11, according to sources. The 34-year-old has clubbed 17 homers with a .248 batting average, .402 on-base percentage and .471 slugging percentage over 94 games.

FANTASY TIP: The rash of injuries to Toronto's offense, headlined by Edwin Encarnacion (quadriceps), prompted the call. Johnson is an AL-only asset and could sneak into some deep-mixed utility, but those players are better off first targeting Juan Francisco, who'll have more guaranteed playing time.

Redskins | Alfred Morris busted out long runs

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 07:12:46 -0700

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris led the NFL with 10 rushes of 20 or more yards in 2013.

FANTASY TIP: Morris was tied for fifth in 2012 with nine. The likelihood of that momentum continuing took a hit when zone-blocking disciple Kyle Shanahan left his offensive coordinator post and the 'Skins shifted to Jay Gruden's pass-happy attack. There are concerns that Morris will drop off this year in the new system, but Morris remains a solid RB2 with a smidge of receptions upside.

Texans | Opinion: Andre Johnson won't be traded

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 06:52:18 -0700

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson "is not going to be traded," in the opinion to John McClain. Houston wants to avoid giving Johnson the $1 million workout bonus that he passed up by not participating in offseason activities or guarantee his 2015 salary. They don't want to create a precedent that can be manipulated by DE J.J. Watt's agent in the future. McClain said that "Any 33-year-old ... anybody doesn't walk away from" the $10 million that Houston owes Johnson.

FANTASY TIP: The financial clarity in this situation makes it likelier that Johnson will report, but you can't guarantee anything until there's a concrete resolution. Johnson remains at least a serviceable WR2 no matter where he plays this year.

Redskins | Competition at kicker

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 06:33:00 -0700

Washington Redskins PKs Kai Forbath and Zach Hocker will compete for the starting job in training camp. Forbath has the early edge because of experience, but the rookie Hocker has done well on field goal attempts so far in offseason practice. Forbath also has spent the offseason working on kickoffs.

FANTASY TIP: The winner of the battle still will be reserved to waiver wire territory.

Red Sox | Not writing off Xander Bogaerts at SS

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 06:22:20 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Xander Bogaerts may still play shortstop in 2014, but the club wants to get him right at the plate before considering it. The likeliest scenario for him playing shortstop would be against a left-handed pitcher.

FANTASY TIP: A lot depends on the status of Will Middlebrooks (finger), where Brock Holt will play, and whether they still value Stephen Drew (maybe he'll be traded). Bogaerts isn't starter-worthy right now in most mixed leagues.

Cardinals | May consider Jose Molina

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 05:45:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C Jose Molina may be an option for the St. Louis Cardinals to replace C Yadier Molina (thumb), in the opinion of ESPN's Buster Olney, who believes the Rays will listen to a trade offer.

FANTASY TIP: Molina would only be valuable as a league crossover commodity for NL-only players. He has done little at the plate, as usual.

Rangers | Adrian Beltre extends hitting streak

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 01:04:04 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre had three hits Thursday, July 10, to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest active streak in the American League. He is hitting .500 (42-of-84) his past 22 home games.

Rangers | Jake Smolinski makes history

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 01:01:55 -0700

Texas Rangers rookie OF Jake Smolinski, who made his major league debut as a pinch hitter Monday, July 7, had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice. He has hits in all three of his starts and is the first Rangers player ever with eight hits in his first four games.

Rangers | Colby Lewis hit hard in LA loss

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 00:58:29 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis gave up 13 runs in 2 1/3 innings, 11 of which were earned, in a 15-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Lewis' ERA went from 5.51 to 6.54 following the loss.

Royals | Jeremy Guthrie clobbered in latest start

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 00:53:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie gave up a career-worst eight earned runs on eight hits, three walks and two hit batters in a 16-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, July 10. Guthrie has allowed 16 earned runs in eight-plus innings covering his last two starts.

Mariners | Robinson Cano strong against Minnesota

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 00:42:59 -0700

Seattle Mariners 2B Robinson Cano is hitting .484 in his last 16 games against the Minnesota Twins.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen loses in first start

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 00:40:42 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen made his first major league start after 191 relief appearances for the Mariners, never pitching more than three innings in his career. He worked 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one hit and three walks with three strikeouts in a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Twins | Yohan Pino sent down following win

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 00:37:21 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Yohan Pino picked up his first major league win Thursday, July 10, with one run and seven hits given up in a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. Pino was optioned to Triple-A Rochester following the game to make room for P Kris Johnson on the roster.
