Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) said he'll throw on Thursday, March 13, for the first time since elbow surgery. It's scheduled to be a five-minute session with tosses at 45 to 60 feet.
FANTASY TIP: He'll likely be ready to rejoin the big club sometime in May, but a longer absence and uncertainty surrounding his rotation spot are possible. He's a shaky mixed-league stash.

Tampa Bay Rays SPs Jake Odorizzi, Erik Bedard and Cesar Ramos all pitched Monday, March 10, as they fight for the fifth spot in the rotation. In his first start of the spring, Odorizzi lasted 2 1/3 innings; he allowed two hits and one walk, also hitting a batter and striking out one. He's still working on the splitter-changeup he has dubbed "The Thing." Bedard, cultivating a changeup of his own, yielded three runs on five hits in three frames. Ramos gave up five hits and two runs in 4 1/3 frames. Manager Joe Maddon said spring training results will not dictate his selection for the fifth starter.
FANTASY TIP: Odorizzi stands as the favorite and is most worth a deep-mixed speculation, but this could be a mix-and-match situation until Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) returns, and even afterward.

Baltimore Orioles P Eddie Gamboa has four scoreless innings in five outings this spring, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six. He's being used both early and late in games.
FANTASY TIP: While Gamboa doesn't have a clear role yet, he's someone to watch for potential inseason fantasy contributions.

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (groin) is not far behind other starting pitchers because of the bullpen sessions he has thrown, said manager Brad Ausmus. Verlander is slated to throw 50 to 55 pitches in his start Tuesday, March 11.
FANTASY TIP: If all goes off without a hitch, Verlander will continue his path of being ready for the start of the season.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Russell Martin went 2-for-2 with a walk and his fourth home run of spring play Monday, March 10. He's hitting .533 with nine RBI in six contests. Martin said he was not comfortable at the plate in 2013. "All year up there I was battling. I remember swinging at pitches and coming in and out of my swing quickly and rolling over pitches I've seen a gazillion times."
FANTASY TIP: Unless Martin has changed something drastic about his swing, it's probably safe to believe that when regulation play starts, he'll go back to his power-fueled, contact-challenged approach that makes him a second catcher in mixed leagues.

New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (foot) will miss two to three months after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot. He's likely to miss part or most of organized training activities.
FANTASY TIP: Dobson figured to be a sleeper in his sophomore season, but this certainly impedes that. Monitor his progress.

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias (shins) is still receiving treatment on his shins. Though he's taking batting practice and fielding ground balls, he's not running.
FANTASY TIP: He did a bit of running a few days ago but hasn't progressed in that department. It's getting unclear as to whether he'll start the 2014 campaign on time. If Iglesias can't go, Steve Lombardozzi or someone else may have to step in for tepid AL-only filler value.

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino has not yet decided on whether he'll continue switch-hitting. Due to injury last year, he switched to hitting exclusively from the right side. Against right-handed pitchers from that box, he hit .300/.386/.510 with six home runs in 115 plate appearances in 2013. As a lefty hitter against right-handed pitchers, he hit .274/.317/.389 with three homers in 229 plate appearances.
FANTASY TIP: This philosophical alteration is something to watch throughout the spring for the middle-rounds mixed pick. His BA improvement to .294 last year probably won't stick, but if he's solved anything with his revised strategy, it has a better chance of sticking than most think.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels (shoulder) could see Grapefruit League action within two weeks if all goes well in his throwing session Wednesday, March 12. He probably will not be active for at least the first two weeks of the regular season.
FANTASY TIP: Philadelphia doesn't need a fifth starter until April 13, so if Hamels can return somewhere in that time frame, he can minimize the damage he'll do to those who'll make him one of their top fantasy arms, if not their No. 1. Stay tuned.
