Lions | Calvin Johnson adjusting approach in practice

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 17:19:19 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is taking part in fewer reps in training camp this year than in years past and said he is trying to be smarter about his approach to practice with the goal of staying healthy the entire season. "I'm older now," Johnson said. "I'm not diving for the balls anymore (in practice). Coach Caldwell has a big emphasis about us staying off the ground. I'm not playing every play in practice but they're working me in. I'm out here trying to get my extra running in after (practice) so I can keep my wind up."

FANTASY TIP: Anything that Johnson can do to avoid the nagging injuries that forced him to miss time down the stretch last season is a good thing for fantasy owners. He should be the first WR off the board in any format.

Yankees | Francisco Cervelli can still be serviceable

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 17:15:12 -0700

New York Yankees C Francisco Cervelli was pressed into regular duty with 1B Mark Teixeira (lat, back) sidelined, and C Brian McCann working at first base. Cervelli has hit safely in a career-high 10 games, and manager Joe Girardi said it is a reminder Cervelli can be serviceable catcher at the big league level. "Great job. I said it last year; Cervy's talented," Girardi said Tuesday, July 29. "It's unfortunate, some of the injuries he's had - broken hand, broken wrist, concussion. But Cervy's player for us and he's played well. He's been thrown into pennant races and everything. We just need to keep him healthy."

FANTASY TIP: With Teixeira back in the lineup Tuesday, and McCann back behind the dish, and the brittle Carlos Beltran serving as DH, Cervelli returned to the bench. He is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues despite his recent success at the plate.

The next outing will be a minor-league rehab game, working either four innings or 60-65 pitches Sunday, Aug. 3, for an affiliate to be determined. Once he makes that rehab outing, that will begin a 30-day rehab clock, which, hopefully, will mean a return to the team sometime in August.
