Fri, 18 Apr 2014 12:33:51 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Brandon Maurer will be recalled from the minors to start Sunday, April 20, against the Miami Marlins.

FANTASY TIP: Look to add Maurer in AL-only leagues if you have pitching needs. Maurer could be in the rotation for only a couple of weeks, however, with Hisashi Iwakuma's (finger) return looming.

Rangers | Have interest in Joel Hanrahan

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 12:21:16 -0700

The Texas Rangers are in the mix to sign free-agent RP Joel Hanrahan (Red Sox). Hanrahan is a native of Lewisville, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas. As many as 20 teams have scouted Hanrahan. The Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians are also believed to be interested, and the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays were reported to be in attendance at his throwing session Thursday, April 17.

FANTASY TIP: The Rangers could use some help in their bullpen with Neftali Feliz in the minors and Tanner Scheppers in the starting rotation. If he signs with Texas, he wouldn't be handed the closer's role but would have a shot if Soria didn't work out.

Reds | Brandon Phillips leaves game

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 11:55:47 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (back) removed himself from the game early Friday, April 18. Phillips looked to have a problem with his back during an at-bat in the first inning.

FANTASY TIP: This could be a pretty serious injury for Phillips. From the looks of his swing, it could have been an oblique injury, but we'll have to wait and see. Check back later for more injury news on Phillips. Ramon Santiago replaced Phillips in the game and would receive most of the playing at the keystone if Phillips misses significant time.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig unaffected by off-the-field story

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 11:54:42 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig said he's unaffected by a story that details his escape from Cuba, including details that say he's receiving death threats from the human traffickers that smuggled him into Mexico. "I feel normal," Puig said in Spanish. "I'm focused on baseball and giving the best of myself to the team and, hopefully, everything turns out well on the field. Those things that are happening aren't affecting me."

FANTASY TIP: As an owner of Puig, you have to wonder how this development will affect his play, if at all. It hasn't been the kind of start most expected for the Cuban outfielder, but it's still early in the season.

Braves | Evan Gattis explains new approach

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 11:03:12 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Evan Gattis is 14-for-33 (.424) with two doubles, four home runs, seven RBIs and six strikeouts in nine April games since the team's opener, and he's 5-for-20 with three home runs in two-strike situations. Gattis explained his success: "It's really just taking my hands directly to the ball," he said. "I was doing it even during spring training, though the results weren't there." Gattis is more concerned with making contact with two strikes, as well.

FANTASY TIP: Gattis' lack of patience was the reason for his decline in the second half last year. The power is obviously still there, but if he can keep this approach all season long, there is batting average upside to be had.

Braves | B.J. Upton showing signs of life

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 11:00:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF B.J. Upton is 10-for-42 (.238) with three extra-base hits, four walks, nine strikeouts and a .304 OPS in his last 10 games, but he's just 2-for-22 with runners on base, including 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. He's 6-for-41 (.146) with a .146 on-base percentage against right-handers and 5-for-17 (.294) against lefties.

FANTASY TIP: Upton can still be useful in very deep mixed leagues, but keep in mind his splits and the fact that he's becoming more and more of a platoon player.

Braves | Alex Wood pitching well

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 10:47:50 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Alex Wood is 2-2 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts this year, and he has the seventh-lowest ERA among National League starters. He also has 24 strikeouts and seven walks in 27 innings, and in his two losses, the team scored one and no runs. The Braves are likely to monitor Wood's innings this year, and a cap of 175 innings seems reasonable.

FANTASY TIP: We mentioned Wood as a sleeper candidate this season, and he shouldn't be in any danger of being bumped from the rotation based on a few bad outings, because the Braves don't have the luxury of rotation depth this year.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira feels great

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 10:46:59 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (hamstring) went 1-for-5 with a single and strikeout in an extended spring training game Friday, April 18, and he said he's feeling great. He's eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list Sunday, April 20. Teixeira played three innings and had three plate appearances in an extended spring game Thursday, April 17.

FANTASY TIP: All signs are pointing toward Teixeira playing Sunday. Be prepared to get him back into your lineups on that day and next week in weekly leagues.
