Rockies | Jorge De La Rosa strikes out 11

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 22:34:31 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa struck out a season-high 11 batters Wednesday, July 23, against the Washington Nationals, allowing two runs - one earned - with eight hits and no walks in 7 1/3 innings. He was one strikeout short of a career high set in 2009.

FANTASY TIP: De La Rosa's name has been bandied about in trade rumors leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and his next start could potentially come in another uniform. If he moves to a contender, his fantasy value could increase dramatically. Of course, he is 42-14 lifetime at Coors Field, not exactly the most pitcher-friendly environment for most, so fantasy owners might not want him to leave Denver.

Phillies | A.J. Burnett moves up strikeouts list

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 22:33:50 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP A.J. Burnett worked eight scoreless innings while allowing four hits and four walks in a no-decision Wednesday, July 23, against the San Francisco Giants. He also struck out six batters while throwing 131 pitches. He moved to 48th on the all-time strikeouts list, passing former New York Mets SP Dwight Gooden.

FANTASY TIP: Burnett is a trade target for plenty of contenders down the stretch, and his fantasy prospects could be about to improve dramatically depends upon where he lands. If he pitches like he did Wednesday, it won't matter where he is.

Phillies | Trade target Jonathan Papelbon bounced around

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 22:33:23 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon was pounded for three earned runs, one hit and two walks in a relief loss Wednesday, July 23, against the San Francisco Giants. He has been outspoken about his interest in moving to a contender before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but he has had two ugly performances in a row. "Whatever happens happens," Papelbon said. "I have no control over it. If you were to put the entire season into two games, it would be pretty dumb."

Panthers | Greg Olsen tired of WR criticism

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 22:33:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen said he is tired of hearing criticism about Carolina's new receiving corps, which is largely made up of journeymen and unproven commodities. Olsen added that the Panthers' offensive identity is not going to change, so controlling the clock through a balanced offense remains important.

49ers | Aldon Smith and Roger Goodell could meet soon

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 22:08:43 -0700

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith is expected to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the near future, which likely would lead to a decision on any discipline for Smith.

Nationals | Anthony Rendon, Danny Espinosa start

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:58:03 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B/3B Anthony Rendon went 1-for-5 with a single and RBI Wednesday, July 23, against the Colorado Rockies. 2B Danny Espinosa made the start at second base, going 1-for-4 with a double, run scored and stolen base.

FANTASY TIP: Rendon and Espinosa each figure to see even more playing with Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list. Rendon, in particular, is very attractive to fantasy owners because of his dual eligibility in both middle and corner infielder spots.

White Sox | Avisail Garcia to accelerate workout routine

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:57:43 -0700

Chicago White Sox OF Avisail Garcia (shoulder) will accelerate his workout routine on the team's road trip. There has been no timetable set for a minor-league rehab assignment.

White Sox | Tailspin continues for Gordon Beckham

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:55:19 -0700

Chicago White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham was hitless in four at-bats Wednesday, July 23, against the Kansas City Royals, and he is now hitting just .132 dating back to June 9, when his average was at its highest point (.298) of the season.

White Sox | Jose Quintana cannot solve Kansas City

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:52:48 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Jose Quintana allowed just one earned run, seven hits and two walks over seven innings Wednesday, July 23, against the Kansas City Royals, but he was unable to pick up a win. He also struck out three batters in the no-decision. Quintana is 0-5 in 11 career starts against the Royals.

FANTASY TIP: Abreu is hitting .377 (20-for-53) with two homers, five RBI and six runs scored during the impressive run.

Twins | Kohl Stewart scratched

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:42:22 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Kohl Stewart (shoulder) was scratched from his start with Class A Cedar Rapids Wednesday, July 23, as he is dealing with "a little shoulder soreness," according to Twins director of minor league operations Brad Steil.

FANTASY TIP: Stewart is one of the team's top prospects, and he joins OF Byron Buxton (wrist) and 3B Miguel Sano (elbow) on the shelf. Stewart is a long way from the majors, but those in dynasty leagues certainly need to know his name.

Tigers | Joe Nathan remains closer

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:40:09 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed Wednesday, July 23, that RP Joe Nathan will remain the team's closer, meaning newly-acquired RP Joakim Soria will work in a setup role.

FANTASY TIP: Nathan's hold on the job is precariously, and he can ill-afford any further blown saves with a proven closer in Soria on the roster and waiting in the wings.

Royals | Wade Davis limiting the damage

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:39:38 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Wade Davis worked a perfect eight-pitch eighth inning to pick up the relief win Wednesday, July 23, against the Chicago White Sox. He improved to 6-2 while lowering his ERA to 1.05. He has not allowed an extra-base hit in 42 2/3 innings this season.

Reds | Zack Cozart available as pinch hitter

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:37:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, while Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (finger) did not play Wednesday, July 23, against the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Bryan Price said he was available as a pinch hitter.

FANTASY TIP: It appears Cozart will avoid a stint on the 15-day disabled list since his skipper said he was available off the bench. That's good news for his fantasy owners.

Indians | Trevor Bauer has been innings eater

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:37:09 -0700

Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer allowed three earned runs, six hits and two walks over six innings in a loss against the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, July 23. He also struck out seven batters in the 99-pitch quality start. Bauer has lasted six or more innings in 11 of his 14 outings this season.

Dodgers | Hanley Ramirez yet to swing

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:36:44 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez (hand) has yet to swing a bat. Manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday, July 23, that Ramirez picked up a bat, "moved it around," but was still "feeling it" in his hand.

Dodgers | Dan Haren will be skipped in rotation

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:35:32 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Dan Haren was told after his start Wednesday, July 23, that his next turn in the rotation will be skipped. He is not expected to pitch again until Aug. 2, at the earliest. The team would like to add an upgrade for the starting rotation, and his spot might be in jeopardy. He is 5-8 with a 5.32 ERA since the end of April.

FANTASY TIP: Fantasy owners obviously need to reserve him. By the time he steps onto the mound again, he could be wearing a different uniform with the non-waiver trade deadline July 31.

Brewers | Aramis Ramirez hits milestone

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 20:19:40 -0700
