The Detroit Lions signed P Drew Butler Friday, July 25. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Yankees | Chris Capuano starting Saturday

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:38:47 -0700

New York Yankees SP Chris Capuano will start Saturday, July 26, against the Toronto Blue Jays. SP Chase Whitley will lose his rotation spot and pitch out of the bullpen.

FANTASY TIP: Capuano hasn't started a game all season, so his innings should be limited. It could take a few starts to stretch his arm out. He is worth a speculative flier in AL-only formats and could develop into a matchup-related deep-mixed play. Obviously, Whitley's value plummets, and he isn't worth a roster spot, at this point.

Vikings | Cordarrelle Patterson not practicing

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:37:14 -0700

Minnesota Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson (undisclosed) is not participating in practice Friday, July 25.

FANTASY TIP: Check back later today when there is more information about what is keeping Patterson on the sidelines.

Saints | Drew Brees wants to play until he is 45

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:32:42 -0700

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he would like to play until he is 45 years old. "No doubt. There's no question," Brees said. "I'm not getting ahead myself, like it's a pipe dream, at 45. I understand the challenges that come along with that. But why not? If I can stay healthy, and I'm having fun and playing at a high level, why wouldn't I wanna do that? The biggest challenge is physically, the maintenance, the recovery, the way you train. You gotta hope that you stay healthy, but why not?"

FANTASY TIP: While playing until 45 may be a stretch, Brees is not slowing down. He is still one of the top fantasy football quarterback options.

Twins | Logan Darnell starting Saturday

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:27:51 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Logan Darnell will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to start Saturday, July 26, against the Chicago White Sox.

FANTASY TIP: Kyle Gibson (back) clearly isn't ready to go. Darnell is a risky spot start in AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | David Ortiz in the lineup

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:12:25 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz (back) is in the lineup Friday, July 25.

FANTASY TIP: He's probably a bit sore after back spasms erupted following a checked swing on Thursday, but you should be complacent with installing him in your Friday lineup.

Angels | Josh Hamilton needs better zone control

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:09:51 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton is hitting .391 on pitches in the middle zone vertically, which is 100 points above the league average. When a pitch is either up or down he is hitting .243, though. Hamilton is swinging at 37 percent of pitches he has seen out of the strike zone. As a result, pitchers are throwing 60 percent of their pitches to Hamilton outside the strike zone.

FANTASY TIP: Clearly, coaches and pitchers have a plan to attack a weakness Hamilton has to his approach at the plate. Hamilton and the Angels' coaching staff will begin to make adjustments. Don't expect significant improvement, but Hamilton will likely try adopt a more selective approach at the plate, which can only help him going forward.

Rays | Wil Myers hits

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:08:59 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Wil Myers (wrist) hit off a tee Friday, July 25, for the first time since sustaining his wrist injury. A rough estimation for his return remains mid-August.

FANTASY TIP: Myers may not do much even after he comes back. Wrist injuries are typically catastrophic for a hitter's fantasy purposes, but desperate teams will be willing to take the chance he bucks the trend.

Lions | Waive Gabe Lynn

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton is batting .200 against curveballs this season. The league average is .247. Hamilton has missed on 49 percent of his swings against curveballs.

FANTASY TIP: Expect Hamilton to begin correcting to the norm. Connecting with a few more curveballs could help his counting stats, but he is unlikely improve drastically enough to help his batting average.

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:57:53 -0700

Seattle Seahawks S Eric Pinkins (Lisfranc) suffered a Lisfranc injury, and is expected to miss up to six weeks, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Angels | Josh Hamilton lacking pop

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:48:45 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton has three home runs in 45 games since returning from the disabled list Tuesday, June 3. Hamilton tore a ligament in his left thumb sliding into first base, and the injury could be lingering and impacting his power.

FANTASY TIP: Hand injuries can be disastrous for hitters, especially concerning their power potential. Hamilton hits in a potent lineup, and he should show more pop as the season continues, though. He is a buy-low candidate.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira update

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:47:57 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (back) said his back spasms are feeling better Friday, July 24. The goal is to avoid the disabled list, and Teixeira said he may begin swinging Friday.

FANTASY TIP: It doesn't hurt to scout out replacements. Teixeira's optimism has misled fantasy owners in the past.

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:30:10 -0700

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson (knee) is being held out of practice Friday, July 25, as a precaution. It is believed the issue is knee related.

FANTASY TIP: This is obviously something to monitor as we get into training camp, although it does not sound like there is anything to be concerned with at this point.

Dodgers | Matt Kemp on the move?

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:23:29 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp is of trade interest to at least five MLB teams, according to sources. There is speculation around the league that the relationship between Kemp and the Dodgers field staff is deteriorating. "Eight years is a long time to be in one place," Kemp's agent Dave Stewart said. "Sometimes change is good. This might be the time to change."

FANTASY TIP: A move is likely to help Kemp's fantasy value. Currently, he is battling for playing time in a crowded Dodgers outfield.
