Tigers | Studying video on Justin Verlander
Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, pitching coach Jeff Jones and SP Justin Verlander analyzed video from the past two seasons, and from Verlander's latest start Monday, June 16, against the Kansas City Royals. "We definitely saw something different between a couple years ago and yesterday," Ausmus said. "I think it's premature. I don't think he needs to reinvent himself. I don't think he needs to start throwing a knuckleball. We're talking about a guy who still throws 96. He hit 98 a few times in Chicago. We're not talking about someone who's gone from 100 to 91. This guy still has it in him. I don't think he's at the point where he needs to reassess his approach to getting hitters out that drastically."
Fantasy Tip: Verlander has allowed seven or more runs in back-to-back outings for the first time in his career, so obviously something is amiss, whether it be mechanics, a nagging injury, etc. The team is working on it, and fantasy owners need to be patient. He is a talented guy who could turn it around soon and re-emerge as a fantasy ace. Plus, there is nothing else to do but be patient, as his trade value is at an all-time low. Why trade him to a competitor just to see the light go off for someone else's team?
