Jets | Geno Smith bothered by ankle
New York Jets QB Geno Smith (ankle) threw three interceptions during practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, and head coach Rex Ryan said "it was brutal." Ryan still thinks Smith is being bothered by an ankle injury. The team has yet to name a starting quarterback heading into their second preseason game, but after today's performance, QB Mark Sanchez looks like he'll start for the second straight week. Smith is dealing with a mild ankle sprain and hasn't missed a day of practice, but the injury clearly affected his performance Wednesday. There's a possibility that Smith won't play at all Saturday, Aug. 17. As a result, the quarterback competition might extend another week. Smith declines to admit that his ankle was the reason for his poor performance. "You see it out there; he's not able to move like he normally does," Ryan said. "He's not able to drive the ball like he normally does."
Fantasy Tip: Smith's injury might just open the door for Sanchez to claim the job. The fact that Sanchez hasn't separated himself from an injured Smith yet doesn't bode well for him, though. He could very well start the season as the starter and give way to Smith as soon as he disappoints. Smith isn't a bad option as a QB3, but nothing more.
