Rockies | Tyler Chatwood refines slider
Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood, with the suggestion of pitching coach Jim Wright, has made strides to refine his slider this season. "I watched him and just said he should move his hand enough to where he could throw his slider like a fastball," Wright said. "Then it turns into more of a power slider, a power breaking pitch." Chatwood threw six scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants in the first game he used his new slider May 24, and struck out a career-high 10 in his next outing.
Chatwood is still learning to pitch, though, after getting spanked to the tune of six runs (five earned) and 11 hits in five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers last week. "I think I am just starting to know myself," Chatwood said. "Before, I was just going out there and kind of throwing as hard as I could. I thought I had to throw 95 (mph) every pitch to get guys out. I don't feel like I need to do that now. I just need to hit my spots, get some good sink and work down in the zone."
Fantasy Tip: Chatwood, despite some rough patches, has pitched as well as any Rockies starter this year aside from Jorge De La Rosa, so he's not going anywhere. Continue to stick with him in deep mixed leagues.
