Cardinals | Three draft picks agree

St. Louis Cardinals P Marco Gonzales, P Rob Kaminsky and SS Oscar Mercado, the organization's first three draft picks in the 2013 First Year Player Draft, have reached contract agreements. Gonzales, as previously reported, signed for $1.85 million. The amount is slightly below the slot value of $2.0558 million for the 19th overall selection. Kaminsky, the 28th overall pick and a compensatory selection for the free-agent departure of SP Kyle Lohse, has agreed to sign for $1.7853 million. Mercado, taken in the second round with the 57th overall choice, received a signing bonus of $1.5 million, which was higher than the value assigned to that slot ($971,400) and lured him away from his commitment to Florida State. He is touted for his defense and projects to remain at shortstop for the long term.

The signing bonuses the Cardinals have handed out thus far equal $5.1353 million, leaving them with $1.7726 million in their pool of slot money. All money used to sign players from the first 10 rounds of the draft count against the pool total. An overage would result in a financial tax or, if extensive enough, the loss of a future draft pick.
