Blue Jays | Jose Bautista heating up
Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista is hitting only .246 this year, but he had two home runs Sunday, May 12, and 16 of his 28 hits this season are for extra bases. He hit just .200 with an .836 OPS and a 23 percent strikeout rate in April, but he's batting .333 with a 1.017 OPS and an 11 percent K rate in May. He's already walked 10 times after walking 11 times last month. Bautista is also being more patient, swinging at only 16 percent of pitches outside the strike zone in his last 53 plate appearances. He had a .253 hard-hit average last month and has a .262 hard-hit average in May. His hard-hit average is how often he's making solid contact. He was 12-for-19 when hitting balls hard last month and is 10-for-10 in May.
Fantasy Tip: The hard-hit average that Simon discusses mainly relates to Bautista's BABIP, or batting average on balls in play, specifically related to balls that he squares up. He may be placing balls better in a small sample size this month, and the fact that he's being more selective is perhaps the most positive sign that Bautista is heating up at the plate.
