Rangers | Joe Nathan's velocity down
Texas Rangers RP Joe Nathan has been averaging 91.1 mph on his fastball this year, which is down from 94 mph from last year. However, he still has only a 1.42 ERA, and he's perfect in five save chances while holding opponents to a .208 average. "Honestly my velocity has been down but I have been effective with other stuff," Nathan said. "As long as I'm getting guys out, that's the name of the game. You don't have to throw 100 mph to get guys out. If your velocity is down you get more movement and I've been using my sinker more and my breaking ball has really come into play."
Fantasy Tip: At age 38, it's no surprise that Nathan might be losing some velocity. However, as he mentioned, he's making adjustments by throwing more breaking pitches. Nathan may not be an elite closer anymore, but he's still very solid and should see plenty of opportunities with Texas.
