Red Sox | Joel Hanrahan needs better command

Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan issued back-to-back walks Wednesday, April 10, and he's given up six runs and five hits (three home runs) while walking two in his last two outings. "To me, location is the most important thing," pitching coach Juan Nieves said. "His stuff is good enough. He throws 99 mph with the great slider. The consistency of that has to be a little better. Big-league hitters feed off poorly located fastballs and poorly located breaking balls." Manager John Farrell thinks Hanrahan's wildness is attributed to him being overly aggressive. If Hanrahan isn't available to pitch Thursday, April 11, RPs Andrew Bailey, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara are all candidates to close. Uehara only threw 12 pitches Wednesday, but they don't want to use him in back-to-back games to start the year.

Fantasy Tip: Hanrahan's owners have nothing to worry about right now, but the Red Sox coaching staff is making it known to him that control is of utmost importance in the American League. Hanrahan struggled with walking hitters late last year, too, so if this continues, it could get him into trouble.
