Cardinals | Mike Matheny to undergo back surgery Monday

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny (back, leg) will undergo surgery in St. Louis Monday, March 11, to remove a fragment from a ruptured disc in his back which has caused discomfort and a numbing sensation in his leg. He is expected to rejoin the team in time for their game Thursday, March 14. Bench coach Mike Aldrete will manage the club in Matheny's absence, with first-base coach Chris Maloney moving to bench coach and Triple-A Memphis manager Pop Warner serving as first-base coach.
