Mets | Still optimistic on Johan Santana

The New York Mets have SP Jonathon Niese as a backup plan to pitch on opening day if SP Johan Santana (shoulder) isn't ready, but manager Terry Collins is still aiming to have Santana good to go on April 1 against the San Diego Padres. Santana is dealing with arm fatigue, but the team hopes to have him throwing batting practice Tuesday, March 5. "It's not doubtful," Collins said about Santana on opening day. "… If he's not ready for Game 1, I think he'll be ready for Game 4."
