49ers | Scott Tolzien in mix for backup QB duties

With the departure of QB Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers backup QB Scott Tolzien will be in the mix for the No. 2 quarterback duties behind starter Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers have spoken highly of Tolzien's work ethic and intelligence. The offense would have to change if he were ever under center, as he is known as a pocket passer. The 49ers may also make a play for QB Josh X. Johnson (Browns) and may opt to use one of their 15 NFL Draft choices on a backup quarterback.
