Mets | Johan Santana has conditioning issue
New York Mets SP Johan Santana is dealing with an "overall conditioning issue," and it could affect his status for the opening day start. He got on a mound for the first time Sunday, Feb. 17, since August and threw only 20 pitches. Dr. David Altchek said Santana isn't strong enough to continue his normal spring progression after examining him this week. Santana will now long toss with the goal of making his spring debut "somewhere in the March 10-15 range," according to general manager Sandy Alderson. "There's no structural issue," Alderson said. "It's just a matter of building up strength, so he'll be long tossing before he gets back on the mound. We just expect that his schedule will have been delayed somewhat."
