Lions | No franchise tag plans
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew once again reiterated that he has no plans to use the franchise tag on any of the team's players this offseason. Last year, the team placed the tag on DE Cliff Avril, but they would have to spend $12.7 million if they wanted to tag him again this season. S Louis Delmas (knees) would have been a candidate for the tag had he not injured both of his knees in the last two years. Detroit wants to re-sign Delmas, but to a short-term deal for less than the $6.8 million tag for safeties. The pool of free-agent safeties may be thin this year because of the cheap price to franchise them, and the Lions need to sign two safeties this offseason, which could drive up Delmas' price on the open market. DE Michael Johnson is a candidate for the franchise tag, too.
