Nationals | Stephen Strasburg has goals in mind
Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg wants to tweak his pitches, particularly his sinker, to break less but fool the hitter even more, and he's working on it in spring bullpen sessions. The big breaks in some of his pitches might make it easier for opposing hitters to differentiate between the pitches. "A hitter can see it," Strasburg said. "Obviously, it looks cooler on TV when you're watching it, when a guy is throwing something that moves like this" – Strasburg waved his hand in a sweeping motion – "or dropping off. But a hitter can see it a lot earlier. I'm trying to get away from that and get more consistent, tighter pitches that are going to break maybe a little bit less, but sharper and later." Last year, his sinker "ran" more than it sunk, so Strasburg wants the pitch to move on two planes, mostly down with movement down away from a left-handed batter.
