Athletics | Grant Balfour to undergo knee surgery
Oakland Athletics RP Grant Balfour (knee) will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. He'll be out four to six weeks but could be ready for the start of the season.
Fantasy Tip: It could be pushing it to expect Balfour to be ready by opening day, but with an extended spring due to the World Baseball Classic this year, there's a chance he could be ready. If Oakland decides to be cautious, Ryan Cook and Sean Doolittle are their options to fill in for Balfour. Cook and Doolittle were both lights out last season, but Cook should be your first target if you're speculating on saves. Remember, Doolittle is a former first baseman and 2012 was his first year on the hill in the bigs. Balfour could also be a trade candidate come this summer, so Cook has more speculative value than just filling in in early April.
