Yankees | Hoping to reduce payroll next season
New York Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said that the team's plan to reduce its payroll to $189 million next season is not set in stone. "Everybody keeps talking about the $189 million," he said. "I addressed it in Phoenix (during the winter meetings). There's not a whole lot more to say. All I can assure the fans is we are always going to field a championship-caliber team. Every single year. Is that our goal next year? Yes, to be at that ($189 million) number, that's our goal. But as I've said from the beginning, that depends on some of our young players stepping up and getting the job done. That has to happen. Or it's going to be difficult."
