Tigers | Bruce Rondon lights up the radar gun
Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon, who will be given every chance to emerge as the team's closer this spring, consistently hits triple digits with his fastball, and he's been clocked as high as 104 mph. His changeup can reach up to 90 mph. "You were pretty much guaranteed to see 100 every time he stepped out on the mound," minor league pitching coach Mike Maroth said. "A hundred is pretty common for him. The thing is, it doesn't look like it's that hard before he throws so free and easy. He's not a max-effort guy. The ball just jumps out." Rondon seems to channel his adrenaline well in the few big situations he's pitched in so far in his career, but he also wasn't auditioning for a major league job, let alone the closing role. His late-breaking slider is an excellent complement that has plenty of movement without losing much velocity.
