Red Sox | Mark Melancon having great month
Entering play Sunday, Sept. 30, Boston Red Sox RP Mark Melancon had allowed one run on four hits through seven appearances this month, with one walk and 12 strikeouts. Manager Bobby Valentine credits his recent success to an improved curveball. "We're getting swings and misses on it and we're getting called strikes," Valentine said. "The righthanded hitters are buckled a little. I believe that pitch has improved with arm speed and deception." Melancon has also displayed an improved fastball to both sides of the plate in recent outings, reaching speeds of 97 mph.
