Athletics | Brandon McCarthy has surgery

Oakland Athletics SP Brandon McCarthy (head) underwent surgery to relieve an epidural hemorrhage and to stabilize a skull fracture Wednesday, Sept. 5, after he was hit in the side of the head by a line drive. He is alert and improving after a third CT scan. SP Dan Straily was scratched from his start in the minors, and he's expected to be an option to enter the rotation if McCarthy can't return.
