Royals | Kelvin Herrera excelling
Kansas City Royals RP Kelvin Herrera has not given up a run in 14 of his last 15 outings and has 19 strikeouts and just three walks in 17 innings over that time. "I think it's a normal adjustment," said Herrera, whose overall ERA is down to 2.55 in 53 appearances. "Everyone goes through that. I'm a rookie, and I want to do well. I've learned to control myself a lot better now, but I still have to keep working on it." Herrera has better learned to control his emotions on the bump; before, too often would he get too amped up, which would cause his 100 mph heat to straighten out. Because of his recent success, manager Ned Yost hasn't been afraid to use him with the game on the line in the ninth inning.
Herrera also recently started using a two-seam fastball, which sacrifices some velocity but offers more movement. "He's doing a really nice job now of changing speeds from a very solid hard fastball," Yost said. "His changeup has always been good. His breaking ball has been good. But changing speeds is going to be the key to his success."
