Pirates | A.J. Burnett loses no-hitter in eighth inning
Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett lost a no-hitter with two outs in the eighth inning Tuesday, July 31, against the Chicago Cubs. INF Adrian Cardenas, fresh from Triple-A Iowa, broke it up with a clean single after nearly striking out on a couple of borderline pitches. Burnett actually turned and motioned to home plate umpire Jeff Nelson after the hit, aggravated by not getting two curveballs for strikeouts against Cardenas. Burnett ended up with a complete-game, one-hit shutout, the first by a Pirates pitcher since SP Todd Ritchie back in 2001.
