Red Sox | David Ortiz going on DL

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said DH David Ortiz (Achilles') will be going on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore right heel. The team will recall 1B Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket. A second opinion confirmed that there were no tears or ruptures in Ortiz's right Achilles' tendon. If the team backdates the DL stint to Tuesday, July 17, Ortiz will be eligible to return around Aug. 1. Ortiz said the injury isn't related to his right heel injury last season.

Fantasy Tip: Boston's offense is fine without Big Papi, so there's no sense in messing around with such a delicate area of the foot. Because there's no structural damage, hopefully Ortiz can return when he's eligible. Gomez has no fantasy value. Ortiz's absence will give Bobby Valentine the flexibility to DH vets like Dustin Pedroia (thumb), who should come off the DL soon. That would allow the skipper to stick with Pedro Ciriaco in the infield. Carl Crawford may be the lead candidate for DH time because of his depleted arm strength thanks to his need for elbow reconstruction in the upcoming offseason.
