Red Sox | Trying to get rid of John Lackey
The Boston Red Sox proposed that the Chicago Cubs take SP John Lackey's contract as part of the compensation for general manager Theo Epstein's move to Chicago. Lackey has three years remaining on his five-year, $82.5 million pact. However, the expected compensation will involve Cubs' minor leaguers, although not OF Brett Jackson, P Trey McNutt or P Matt Szczur. Cash will not be part of the swap.
While the San Diego Padres have not confirmed the report, general manager Jed Hoyer is expected to be hired as the Cubs' next general manager under Theo Epstein. There will be no compensation for Hoyer, according to sources. Padres vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes will become the new GM in San Diego.
