Panthers | Cam Newton has a long way to go

Carolina Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton took the field for the first time Saturday, July 30. The first-overall selection in the NFL Draft said he never considered holding out. Newton said he feels like he has come a long way since the summer, but he said he still has a long way to go before he will be comfortable in running the offense. He said QB Jimmy Clausen, who Newton is competing with for the starting job, has been an invaluable resource to him in helping him understand the offense. "The golden rule is that competition brings out the best in everybody, but at the end of the day, we're still teammates. We still have respect for each other," Newton said of Clausen.
