The Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins released WRs Jammie Deese and Ethan Howell to free up needed cap space to re-sign LB Kevin Mitchell. He signed a two-year, $1.2 million contract Wednesday. Mitchell received a $75,000 signing bonus and will have a $477,000 salary for the 2001 season. The Redskins begin a two-day mini-camp at Redskins Park beginning Saturday. One player who will miss the mini-camp is CB Deion Sanders. He has had a great spring camp for the Cincinnati Reds and GM Jim Bowden said yesterday Sanders's performance has virtually ensured Sanders will be back in the major leagues soon after he is eligible to rejoin the Reds May 1. Coach Marty Schottenheimer has said he has no problem with Sanders playing baseball but would expect Sanders to be on hand for the opening of training camp in late July if he intends to play for the Redskins next season.
