Rams | New Defense | More
According to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch, reporting in the Sporting News, the arrival of Tampa Bay assistant Lovie Smith as defensive coordinator means the Rams will be switching to the "cover-2" base defense. The safeties will now split the field in coverage as the Rams move away from their traditional man-to-man defense. The defense requires more agressive play from the CBs and speed at the linebacker position. The feeling at Rams Park the defense just needs to be average for the team to make another strong run at the Super Bowl title. The Rams want to give WR/PR Az Hakim at least one more shot under new special teams coach Bobby April and new WRs coach Ken Zampese. Another off-season decision facing the Rams is free agent PK Jeff Wilkins. He's due a healthy raise, but Rams management traditionally doesn't like to pay a lot for kickers.
