49ers | A. Smith not being asked to carry offense

Lowell Cohen, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said he will limit how often QB Alex D. Smith is used out of the shotgun formation, instead continuing to rely on a run-first philosophy. "One of the worst things we could do right now is to put Alex D. Smith in shotgun and say, 'OK, let's go get it, guys,' and let him throw 40, 50 times a game," Singletary said. "Alex is throwing as well as any quarterback in the league right now. He is as accurate as any quarterback in the league. The smartest thing for us to do is not to take all of training camp and just throw it out and say, 'We're going to go to the shotgun.'"
