Lions | Maximize Protection

Tom Kowalski reports for mlive.com the Detroit Lions added players during the first day of the NFL Draft that will QB Charlie Batch something he needs - protection from oncoming pass-rushers. The Lions addressed their offensive line problems Saturday by using their first two picks in the NFL draft on that position (OT Jeff Backus of Michigan and C Dominic Raiola of Nebraska). "We solidified a position that needed to be solidified. We said right from the start that we had to address the offensive line," said Lions president Matt Millen. It's possible that Backus will start at left tackle, Aaron Gibson will move to left guard, Raiola will be the center with Brenden Stai and Stockar McDougle playing right guard and tackle, respectively. The Lions did discuss moving down before selecting Backus.
