Panthers | Phone Calls Get the Job Done

The Charlotte Observer reports an all out blitz of phone calls by current Carolina Panthers players to free agent OT Todd Steussie convinced him to join the Panthers. QB Jeff Lewis and Steussie's former Vikings teammate, CB Jimmy Hitchcock, led the way. Team owner Jerry Richardson, team President Mark Richardson, coach George Seifert and offensive line coach Paul Boudreau also bombarded the Steussie with phone calls Wednesday afternoon. Steussie said Lewis was convincing because he sounded like a quarterback ready to emerge. Steussie will play left tackle and join newly signed free agents in C Jeff Mitchell and G Kevin Donnalley. They'll be joined by right tackle Chris Terry, while Jamar Nesbit, Bryan Stoltenberg and Leander Jordan will compete for the left guard job. Once Stuessie's contract is signed, the Panthers will have slightly more than $200,000 in cap space.
