Bengals | Lewis acknowledges Shirley pick a risk
Mark Curnutte, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said the drafting of DL Jason Shirley was a bit of a risk because of his checkered past. "It's a little bit of a risk, yes. There's a lot of guys who have gone over the last two days with more substantial things hanging over their heads," Lewis said. He was suspended by Fresno State for the first two games last season because of conduct detrimental to the team. He has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence and one count of hit-and-run stemming from incidents in October 2007. He has pled not guilty to the charges. A jury trial is pending. Shirley said he has told the Bengals he is not the person his previous actions indicate.
